Introduction
What a wonderful time in the lives of Can and Sanem Divit. They had been blessed with another child, a boy, due in a matter of days. The triplets were almost 5 years old and curiosity had certainly over taken the three children. They had a hundred questions a day for Sanem or Can to answer, but the answer never seemed to come out right. It only left the opportunity for more questions to arise. As they watched the change in their mothers body over the months, fear was the only thing that they could see. Can and Sanem both assured them the baby would appear and things would return to normal, just as before.
The day of Sanem’s birthday had always been a major affair, but this one was different. She wasn’t feeling well, so they would have to postpone the celebration. The children made her cards, and decorated cookies for her, presenting them to her along with her favorite tea, as she rested in bed. Can smiled as each one of them had to describe their card to her. She tried hard to focus on the precious gifts they had brought her, but the gnawing demanding pain that had setup in her back was occupying all her attention. Can could see the discomfort in her face so he scooted the children out of the room, so she could rest.
By the time he had gotten the kids to bed and settled the pain in Sanem’s back had radiated around to the front, making her painfully aware of what was to come. Her heart was full of love for this tiny baby boy that she would bring into the world, and to be blessed with such a gift on her birthday was almost more than she could hope for. But her wish was closer than ever to coming true when she had to wake Can a couple of hours later for a quick ride to the hospital. The family had been waiting patiently for Can to make an appearance and delivery the news. It was a few minutes after midnight when Can opened the door to the waiting room, “ Well, my son is here, he arrived 30 minutes before midnight and gave Sanem the best birthday gift ever.
Duman Divit…..the youngest son of Can and Sanem Divit. They had decided this would complete their family, four would be enough for them. As they watched the tiny baby sleep in the crib next to their bed, he held Sanem in his arms, ” We have made our lives complete, my love, I feel these children of ours will represent us and our love for centuries to come.” He kissed her forehead, swallowing down the lump in his throat. She smiled, wondering how they had been so fortunate to live this life of love, so fully and deeply.
All because she entered the wrong room at that 40th anniversary party……..
This journey had been long, but so worth it. She would have traveled it a hundred times for this man of her heart……….
Chapter 1
We will begin this story fifteen years later, with the triplets out of high school and ready to embark on their future. All looking to enrich what had been given to them, and find their purpose in life. Hope you enjoy this story….
Can and Sanem had raised their children to be independent and strong, and they excepted what each one them had planned for their life. Yilly was the carbon copy of her grandfather Aziz, with every moment being spent at the agency with Dad and Emre. Although Can had a talent for the advertising business, it wasn’t particularly his desire. He had already made a name for himself in photography and that was for sure his passion, but he was quite happy with a less demanding role of that profession. He didn’t have that desire to travel again, to traipse around in unknown places, for the shot of a lifetime. He was happy beyond belief with his job at the agency, and Sanem helping out when needed, and spending as much time with his children as he could. ” Can, you know that Deniz has another offer for the university in Ankara,” she handed him the letter. ” Why is he so set on Okan University, you would think he would like to get away from home.” Can smiled, ” But If he did, who would cook for him, or do his laundry, and then of course, there’s Asli. I don’t see him going to far away from that girl.” He looked at Sanem, still holding that very feeling in his heart. She knew that was true, and she hated the feelings she had about it, but she wanted him to take full advantage of what was offered to him. Deniz was low key, and very sincere when it came to his feelings. She could see how serious he was about Asli, but she also wanted the most for him.
Yilly and Ates came bursting in the door, ” Mom, Dad, please try to talk to her, she’s still set on going to Naples, and she says she going in a month.” Yilly told them, putting her hands on her hips in that defiant manner of hers. ” Mom, you’re not going to let her go,….are you?” Sanem’s eyes darted toward Can, her heart sank, looking to Can of support. Sanem had not expected her daughter to leave so soon, or to even leave at all. This was all happening to soon. Can raised his eyebrows, ” Ates, when did you make this decision, it would be nice to discuss something like this with us first.” He remarked to her, his eyes pleading with her. Ates sighed, ” Dad, I just said I’m thinking about it, and Yilly got all upset about it.” But…..I am thinking about it.” She emphasized, trying to sound sure of herself. Sanem had known about the small school outside of Naples that had been in contact with Ates, offering her a spot there to study. It was more of an elite little school, only taking in a limited number of candidates each year. Ates had applied without Sanem and Cans knowledge, not telling them anything about it until the acceptance letter came. Their daughter was always more aloof, ready to try whatever came her way, but to move all the way to Italy,…and at her age, would they be able to let her do that. Can eyes his daughter, ” Let’s rephrase that my dear, We’ll think about it.” I think your mother and I still have a say about what you do .” He told her, reaching for Sanem to give her a hug.
Ates nodded, knowing she would have to agree, to get her way. But she had already excepted it in her mind, and the thoughts of traveling to Naples, living there, studying there,…it was what she wanted to do. She was her mothers daughter, her head was full of thoughts and putting them on paper for all to read was her dream. She already had a box full of notebooks, they were a collage of her life. Each one telling a story of who she was and where she came from, it was her way of dealing with being a triplet and being part of one of the most influential families in Istanbul. Sanem knew Ates was talented, otherwise she wouldn’t have been offered the spot there. She wanted her to stay closer to home, at least in Turkey, but she never wanted to stifle her daughters the way her and her sister had been, so she owed it to her, and herself to at least listen to what she had to say.
Can had always demanded they eat the last meal of the day as a family, and this day was no different. They were setting the table when Deniz came home, ” Hello, I’m home.” He said as he came in the door, ” Sorry I’m late, the coach was giving me some last minute instructions on Okan University, you know that’s were he went to.” He told them. ” He says there’s not a better school around.” Can listened to him, feeling a twinge of jealousy bite at him for the way his son took each word his coach said to heart. Deniz draped his arm around Cans shoulders, ” I don’t know when I’ve been more excited about anything in my life.” He stated, giving them that smile that he had inherited from his father. This boy had turned into a man, a handsome man, a couple of inches taller than his Dad, muscular in frame, a strong chiseled face. His hair was slightly darker in color than Can’s, but just as long and vibrant as his fathers. He was as dynamic as his father had been the first time Sanem saw him. He was sure of himself, confident, but yet quiet, all those qualities that would turn everyone’s head. Deniz Divit, was for sure recognized as the son of Can Divit.
The conversation about Italy, Okan University, the agency, those all were put on hold as the family took this time together. Duman, the youngest son, was perhaps the most quiet of the four. He listened, studied, and marveled at the way his siblings knew exactly what they wanted to do in life. He was about to turn fifteen, still in school, still trying to figure out where he fit into this family of perfect people. He loved his brother, but envied the way he looked, his athletic body, his bronzed skin and that hair that was definitely his trademark, but most of all his confidence. Then there was Yilly, she was the most annoying big sister ever, always watching over him like she was the mother. Ates was probably the one that he treasured the most, because she always listened to him, when he as ready to talk, offered an opinion when he asked her for it, and never judged him. He had been given a family full of love for each other, and for that he was grateful, but he wanted to be as sure of himself, as powerful and intense as his three older siblings. They seemed to have been given a gift of something he didn’t receive. A bond of love tighter than of the heart, it was from the soul.
He would have to prove himself worthy of the Divit name,….or so it seemed to him.
He wouldn’t live in the shadows of Divit triplets,….at least not forever…
Chapter 2
” Sanem my love don’t worry, we’ll talk it out. But….if Naples, Italy is were she’s determined to go, then there’s not a lot we can say.” Can was reassuring her, stroking her arm as he wrapped his arms around her. The feel of her still excited him, made him feel alive. Almost 21 years of marriage and she could arouse him with just a look. She sighed, ” I know, but why can’t she find a school around Istanbul that has good literature department?” Her stomach twisting In knots thinking about the inevitable. Yilly interrupted them, ” I’ll tell you why,…because she thinks you both will try and control her if she stays her.” She leaned against the kitchen counter, eyeing them. Can gave her a look, ” Enough Yilly, we don’t try and control her, or any of you.” He shook his head as he walked to the patio. Yilly followed, ” Dad, look she’s not like Deniz and me, we are happy right here in Istanbul.” But she needs the adventure, the experience of different places.” She stated. Can had also known that need when he was younger, the desire to see every corner of the earth, but it was hard to see your child set out alone.
The thought of her sister leaving and moving all the way to Italy wasn’t something she wanted to think about. She couldn’t imagine life without her there every day, her quirky little actions, her way of making all things look better than they were. But she was head strong and stubborn, something she had developed from their mother, and didn’t have a clue how to take care of herself. Yilly had already made her decisions for the future, she would stay right here in Istanbul, attend Koc University the Business Department, and work part time at the agency, that was it, done. That’s all she had ever wanted to do, since she was a little girl and she would demand to go to the office with her Dad. Her life was simple, and her dreams were to take over the agency one day after her Dad and uncle retired and build it into the largest advertising agency in Turkey. Can and Sanem were already aware of this, and they knew she would do just what she had planned. Yilly was the apple of her granddads eye, and he had taught her well, along with her Dad. They were both happy to one day turn it all over to her.
Sanem was curled up in her chair in the garden, her favorite place. This place had always made her feel better, but right now she was struggling with it. Her babies were growing up, moving on with their lives without her. She felt the closest to Deniz, she always had, and Ates was so much like her it was like looking in a mirror. Can watched her from the doorway, the sight of her thrilling him, even with the few strands of grey hair that weaved through her hair, she was still the most beautiful woman in the world. Her face was full of sadness, and thought, as he walked across the lawn and sat down beside her, ” I bet I can tell you what your thinking.” He spoke softly, tracing her fingers with his. She smiled, she knew he could, he always could, ” Oh, are you sure about that?” She replied, feeling her skin tingle from his touch. ” You’re wondering why we aren’t already in bed, enjoying each other’s company.” You’re wondering why we’re worried about the kids we raised them to do just this.” His hand traveled all the way up her arm, grazed across her neck and cupped her face in his hand, sending waves of chills through her body. She closed her eyes, ” Can, how did you know,” she said just loud enough for him to hear.
Their oldest son broke their spell, as Can was helping Sanem out of her chair, ” Dad, hey sorry to bother you, but I need a word with you,” Deniz motioned for him to follow him. With them out of hearing range from his Mom he asked, ” I know Mom and Duman’s birthday is in two days, and I wondered if you had special plans for the family or with just you two.” He said, fidgeting with his phone. ” I thought if you were planning a dinner for all of us, then….maybe I could ask Asli.” Can had already planned to have a simple family dinner without a lot of flare this year, so he didn’t see any reason why she couldn’t come. ” I think that would be great son, your Mom would love it too.” Can told him. ” Thanks Dad, she’ll be excited.” He hurried off to make the call to her. Sanem had already made it to the bedroom and was ready for bed. Can closed the bedroom door, drinking her in, ” I don’t know why you insist on putting on those night gowns.” He moved toward her with that look she had seen so many times before, but it still rocked her to the core. This man was just a sensual at 52 years old as he was at 30. His fingers slid under the straps of her negligee, slipping them down over her shoulders and letting it fall to the floor. The vision of her body, the feel of her skin, and the smell of her cream, all these things had filled his heart with love for her all these years, and would until his dying day. He covered her mouth with his lips, tasting the sweetness of hers, feeling the heat rise from his body as he let his mouth travel down her neck. She was all he lived for, and all he ever wanted. The demand and vigor to fill his desire of her hadn’t diminished any in over 21 years, and she welcomed every bit of it with excitement.
It was early when Sanem woke up, even before it was light outside. She watched Can sleep for a minute, and the thought of spending the next twenty years with him send a chill up her spine. At times they had just taken this life for granted, as the children were growing up and they got in their rut of living day to day. But she was getting older, she would be 49 years old in a day or two, not old by any means, but old enough to lose your children to their own lives. Duman would soon be making his plans to step away from them and start that journey on his own as well. She hadn’t prepared for it, she thought she had, but her heart was sad and empty as the image of Ates boarding that plane to Italy flashed into her head.
She wrapped a blanket around her and found her place in the garden. She did what she always did when she felt the world was giving her more than she could handle…..she wrote. Why it helped to pour all her fears and disappointments our onto a page of paper, she didn’t know, but it did. She had filled almost a hundred notebooks with her thoughts over the years, reading them to the children each year on their birthday. Which meant she would read this year’s notebook to Duman in a couple of days.
They were somethings that never made it in the notebook, the private moments of their life together, the times that were burned in her soul. But she remembered each and every one of them, and loved them. She hoped for the rest of her time on earth to be spent the arms of this man she loved more than herself……..
Chapter 3
She finished all her thoughts of the day, closed her notebook and went back to the house. Ates was making tea as she came into the kitchen. ” Oh,…your up early, do you feel ok?” Sanem asked her daughter. She shook her head, ” Yes, I’m fine, just thinking,….you know how that is Mom, I saw you out there in the garden writing.” She smiled and handed her a cup of tea. Their connection was strong, and she understood her probably better than anyone, so she knew that desire to follow her dreams would end up just as she planned. Sanem had plans when she was her age, she wanted to live in Galapagos, she wanted to write a novel and become a well-known writer, but she had been born to a family of limited means, so her plans were altered. The well-known writer part came true, she worked hard to do it on her own, but following her heart to Galapagos to live was still a dream of hers. Her daughter motioned for her to sit, ” Let’s talk a minute Mom, I’ve missed our talks.” They snuggled up together in the sofa like a couple of girlfriends about to share their inner most secrets.
” Mom,” she started, ” I want you to be ok with what I decide to do about Italy.” You know the school is the best in the country, and I really want to see the world. It’s not like I won’t come home from time to time.” She studied her mother’s face, she saw that look of defeated acceptance creeping in. ” You know I can’t go without our talks for too long at a time, so I’ll try to come home often.” She laid her head on her Mom’s shoulder. Sanem held back the tears, but the feeling of her heart breaking couldn’t be held. She did manage a smile for her daughter, and she was truly happy for her to follow her dreams, Ates was so much stronger than she had been at her age.
Can had watched them from the doorway for a minute, letting them have their moment together before entering the kitchen. ” Hey, hey, there’s my two favorite girls.” He said as he reached for his tea cup. Ates laughed, ” You better not let Yilly hear you say that,…she won’t like it.” Raising up to give her Dad a kiss on the cheek. Can nodded his head in agreement, knowing all to well that his oldest daughter was much in need of all his attention. ” Well, my girls, what have you two been talking about.” He asked, as he gave his wife a peck on the lips. Longing to give her more than that, but their children had always snarled at the showing of their affection for each other. ” Dreams.” Sanem stated, glancing at her daughter, ” Can, we need to make some plans to fly to Naples and get our daughter setup in a nice place to live while she’s studying there.” I don’t want to worry about her living conditions while she’s gone.” She patted Ates’s hand, got up and quickly left the room to hide the tears that had escaped her eyes, leaving Can and Ates to hash out the details.
Can have her a look of accomplishment, “Looks like you won her over, how did that happen? Her Dad pinching her on the nose. She smiled at him, ” I’m not sure, but I’m ready to go when you all are.” The classes start in a month.” He could see the excitement oozing from her, but he was sure he felt the same way as Sanem. ” Ates, are you sure you want to be that far away from home. It’s just your first trip.” Why don’t you try a school closer to Istanbul, then maybe next year going abroad.” He reasoned with her. She shook her head, ” No Dad, this spot is open to me now, it may not be in a year, I have to go now.” You’re not going to give me a hard time are you?” She asked, pleading with him. He swallowed down the tightness in his throat, ” I want to, but I know how badly you want this, so if your mothers fine with it, then so am I, but there will be some rules. Can sat his tea cup down on the table, taking her hand, he looked deeply into her eyes, ” You will come home on the holidays and on your birthdays, as well as your mothers birthday.” And my birthday is an absolute must, or I will be on the first plane to Naples.” Do you understand?” He stated, in his very authoritative tone. She threw her arms around his neck, ” Thank you Dad, I love you so much.” Just as Yilly walked in the room, ” What’s going on, what are you thanking him for Ates.” She asked, trying to wedge herself between the pair. ” I’m going to Naples, Italy, can you believe it? She screeched, making Yilly cover her ears. ” Really,….Dad I can’t believe you’re going to allow her to go, you know Mom’s going to nix the whole thing.” Ates stood up, ” No she isn’t, she has already given me her blessing, and they are going to Naples with me to help me get settled in.” She replied to her sister. Yilly shook her head, ready to dispute what she was hearing, but Can held up his hand, ” Yilly, you don’t have a say in this, I know you’re going to miss your sister, but your mother and I have agreed to let her go.” He announced, giving her a look. There had always been a little tension between the two sisters, with Yilly taking the older sister role very serious. Though she was only a few minutes older, she was the one that ruled her siblings. ” See Yilly, you don’t know everything, and now you won’t have me to boss around anymore.” She spouted, her words touching a sore spot with Yilly.
Ates stormed out in a huff, leaving Can to deal with Yilly. ” Dad why are you letting her go, she’s not experienced enough to go off on her own.” Can patted her on the leg, ” It will be fine, you need to worry about yourself and let your sister and your brothers take care of themselves.” By the way, when do your classes start? We need to discuss you working arrangements and since you and Deniz will be going to universities that a close to each other, maybe there’s a possibility you can share a car.” He told her, watching her face squish up. ” No Dad, please, I don’t want to ride around in a car with him and his jock buddies. They smell like sweat and they all have an ego problem.” She told him. ” I’ll take the bus to school if I have to, but I won’t ride with him.” Can laughed, ” I think you’re a bit dramatic my daughter, but we’ll see how it goes.”
He found Sanem in the shed behind the house, trying to act busy with her creams, but he knew she had been crying. ” My love, she will be fine. I’ve already laid down the rules to her. She’s to be home every holiday and all birthdays.” He leaned down nuzzling her neck, ” You smell delicious, any chance we can escape to the bedroom for a midday rendezvous.” He let his hand glide down over the body. She sucked in her breath, ” Can, you are impossible, all the kids are home.” Closing her eyes, she let the feeling of him coat her skin. She couldn’t think of anything better, but……..
There was always a “but”…… maybe it was time for them to start thinking about themselves
She turned and molded her body to his, her eyes searching his……” Why escape to the bedroom,….just lock the door.” He stared at her in disbelief, then flipped the lock…….
Chapter 4
Can was up early, this was a day he loved. Sanem and Duman’s birthday, it was the most special day of the year. He always started it off with breakfast in bed for her, before the beginning of the day for everyone else. He brought the tray to the bedroom, she always pretended to be asleep, but he knew she wasn’t. He gently moved the strands of hair that had fell down across her face, her beauty was a sight to behold. She slowly opened her eyes, ” Can, my love, good morning.” Her voice low, taking on a breathless tone. He could make her heart skip a beat, without even trying, as she felt the love in his touch. ” Good morning birthday girl, I made you something special,” he bent down to kiss her cheek, ” the more important gift will come later tonight.” He whispered in her ear, making her body invite a thousand goosebumps to invade her. She sat up, trying to take control of the situation, but his eyes held her in their grasp. ” Thank you, it really looks delicious,….are you going to join me.” She asked, shifting her eyes away from his. ” Of course, I’m not going to let you do anything alone today, I’m attached to you like glue.” She sighed, Oh my, he will be the death of me yet, she thought, as she try to focus of the tray of food.
After their time alone to start the day, they always made sure their son received all the attention. Duman’s brother and sisters had made sure to shower him with gifts over the years, sharing a birthday with someone can be quite unmeaningful, as the triplets knew, so they separated the day between the two. The first part of the day was for Duman, whatever he wanted to do, whatever he wanted to eat, it was all up to him. Then the gifts, and since he didn’t have a taste for cake, he preferred the baklava that his grandma Mevkibe made each year instead. So she always delivered the gift on the morning of his birthday herself, and the grandparents stayed to celebrate with the family. His grandpa Aziz had never missed a birthday, but his health had taken a turn for the worse, so the short trip from his and Mihriban’s house to Can and Sanem’s was going to be a struggle for him this year, but he refused to miss it. With Can and Deniz helping the elder Divit make his way to their house, Can wondered if this may be the last birthday Duman would have all this family with him to celebrate.
Duman was happy with all his gifts, especially the gift from Ates. They had that bond of acceptance, he confided in her and she never judged, making them the best of friends. The news of her going abroad to school hadn’t met well with him, ” I can’t believe your leaving Abla, and I get this news in my birthday, that’s hardly what I would call a great birthday gift.” He hung his head, hiding the disappointment that had formed in his eyes. She gave him her gift, ” Here…this is for you, and I expect you to use it.” She told him. ” This will take care of all the talks we will have while I’m gone.” He opened the bag, inside was a box of stationary, very rustic, antique looking paper, it had the appearance of something that had been burnt around the edges. It was very exquisite looking paper. ” I want you to write to me everyday, at least,……it will be just like when we have our talks, but better.” She stated. He smiled, ” I love the paper, thank you, but I will miss seeing you.” He said. Yilly was always jealous of the closeness the two shared, ” Hey,..I’ll still be here little brother, we can talk about anything.” She smiled at him. The young Divit knew she meant well, but she was like the evil step mother, always correcting, bossing, and forcing her opinion on him,…but that was just “Yilly” the oldest sibling of the Divit clan. Sanem interrupted ” I’m sure Duman will be happy to talk to either of you, and even Deniz, if he needs help or advice.” But he does have a good head on his shoulders and can think for himself.” She told them, speaking like a true mother, proud of all her children. He smiled at his mother, she had always been a someone he could count on, she had much higher thoughts of his ability then he did.
Can clapped his hands together, ” Ok,…I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m more than ready for this delicious baklava that grandma Mevkibe brought us.” The grandmother smiled, she loved it when she could please the men in her family with food. They all dived into the golden brown pastry, with Duman taking more than his share. Sanem watched her family, remembering those tiny babies they had brought home from the hospital so long ago. Sharing her special day with her youngest son had brought her the most joy, but she knew one day, sooner than she wanted he to would be going off to start his life. These times would then be just a memory of her life, but she would still have her Can, the person that would always hold her together. Can had planned a dinner for just their family that evening but had allowed Deniz to invite Asli to join them. After dinner they all sat outside by the pool, enjoying the company. Both Can and Sanem had noticed the attention that Deniz had for Asli, knowing full well that look of infatuation his son for this girl. She was from a good family, though not a wealthy one, they were hard working. Much like Sanem’s family when he met her. The couple had met in school and had become instant friends, with Deniz almost Immediately falling for her. Asli was a beautiful, and smart girl, with lots of potential. She had her dreams of working with children, as a teacher or a counselor. She had already entered some classes for child development, at the same university as Deniz. They understood why he had decided not to accept any of the offers from the many schools that had contacted him.
Duman and his mother had spent a perfect day, as he said goodnight to his parents, thanking them for their gifts and their love, ” Mom, Dad, this has been the best birthday, all except the news from Ates, but I guess I have to accept it.” He said as he gave his Mom a hug. ” Duman, she be home for all of our occasions so don’t worry.” Sanem told him, reassuring him. Sanem loved the way they got along, so pure and unconditional. Deniz had gone to take Asli home and Ates had gone to her room, so they were alone with Yilly, and she was never one to not say what she was thinking. ” You know that Deniz only picked Okan University because Asli was going there, right.” She stated, glaring at her parents. ” He had offers from better schools, but he didn’t even consider them.” Dad you need to talk to him, he’s a great basketball player and could get accepted anywhere.” She told them.
Can smiled, ” Yilly, this is not your life, it’s your brothers and if he wants to go to Okan, then so be it. He’ll make the right decision for him. Keeping Yilly in check was a lot harder to do, she had always taken on the responsibility of her brother and sister.
Sanem took Yilly’s hand, ” Let him go, you worry about yourself and your choices. He makes his choices with his heart and his mind, and those are the best ones……
Chapter 5
Can had promised to give her birthday gift to her that night, so after everyone had left and all the kids had gone to their rooms, Can led her to her spot in the garden. Sanem loved to sit out here under the stars, and when it was just her and Can, It was even more special. Before he had a chance to tell her about her gift, she made an announcement herself, ” Can, babe, I think I want to come back to work at the agency. The kids are all going their separate ways and Duman is old enough to take care of himself now, so I think it’s time.” Sanem looked in his eyes, her fingers gliding through his beard. That gesture that always made him weak, was so full of love. ” Besides I think I would like to spend a little bit more time with you, do you have any objections.” She asked..
” Objections?” That would be absurd. I think that’s the best idea you’ve had but are you sure you’re ready to return.” Can remarked, pulling her close to him. She smiled, ” I’m sure I want to be with you more, I’m sure I don’t want to get bored here at home. But if you like to be separated in the day, then I can find someplace else to work.” She replied, batting her eyes at him. ” Uhh, I don’t think so Mrs. Divit, I don’t like being away from you at all, so……when do you want to start.” He whispered, his lips brushing past hers. She felt those butterflies, and the shiver of excitement, ” I don’t know….you’re the boss.” Her eyes beckoning him. Can cleared his throat and moved back, ” Oh, I almost forgot about your gift, and that might have some bearing on when you come back to work.” He reached into his pocket and brought out a paper, ” This is an itinerary of our second honeymoon, I think the kids can stay alone here for a few weeks, and Dad and Mihriban are right here along with your parents.” Can smiled at her. She read the list on the paper, “first stop…Rome for a week, then on to Madrid, Spain to catch a connecting flight to Guayaquil, Ecuador. From there they would fly to San Cristobal Island, Galapagos. Her eyes filled with tears, was this for real, had he booked them a trip of a lifetime.
She hadn’t expected anything like this, and he knew he had given her the best gift possible. “Well, what do you think, are you up for it, Mrs. Divit. I think it’s time, don’t you.” She closed her eyes and thought back to the night in the pier in Agva, and how he had been surprised she wanted to go to Galapagos to write. ” Yes,…I do and think it’s time. Do you remember the night on the pier, when I first told you my plans for my life?” She laid her head in his shoulder, ” You were not in those plans that night, but right now I can’t Imagine my life without you.” He stroked her hair with his hand, ” I remember all to well that night, and I think I knew that night that you would be forever in my heart.” And after almost 25 years, you still fill me with wonderment.”…. So, I thought we could take Ates to Naples, get her settled there, then we could go on to Rome, then from there we would start the second part of our life together.” He kissed the top of her head, wondering what his life would have been if he hadn’t stayed to take over for his Dad. He knew he would have never gotten married, especially to Polen. His life would have been lonely and empty without her, and the kids. He smiled, ” But he did stay, and his life is full of love.” He closed his eyes letting the smell of her surround him…that smell he could never get enough of.
The next few days were hectic, getting everyone started in their classes, and the schedule lined out for Yilly. She had insisted on working at the agency part time while going to school. She did have quite a talent for the advertising business, and Deren was glad to have the help, with all the new business coming in. Yilly reminded her of Sanem when she first came to work there, so full of ideas and each one so unique. Yilly wanted to take the agency and make it the best in Turkey, not just Istanbul, that wasn’t good enough, and she had the talent and drive to just that. Aziz had taken her under his wing as she was growing up, instilling in her, all the qualities that it would take to run the company one day. Can was most proud for being so strong willed and independent, not letting her inexperience become a factor, she had always been far more advanced for her age.
The news of their parent’s trip came as a surprise to them, but they were happy for them. Yilly probably the most, because that meant she would have control of her two brothers, something she delighted in, but they dreaded. Her excitement was short lived, after finding out that grandma Mevkibe would be coming to stay with them for that time. ” Mom, Dad, I am more than capable of taking care of the house and the boys while you are gone, so there’s really no need for grandma to come. It will be an in inconvenient for her, I know.” Yilly told them, so self-assured. They knew how much she loved to be in charge, but it wasn’t always in the best interest of her brothers, ” Yilly, you mother and I have made the decision and that’s the way it will be. Grandma is more than happy to come stay with you all, just to make sure you all are fed properly.” He watched her face take on that pout she always had when things didn’t go her way.
Deniz was the least affected by the decision, he hadn’t planned on being around much anyway. His life would be consumed with his studies and basketball, and of course, Asli. She was a very important part of his life and he wanted so badly to tell his parents what the two of them had been talking about. His plans for the future were solely involved with getting through the first year of school, and if his grades where good enough, there was a possibility he could work in a firm under an apprenticeship as he finished the out his schooling. If all that fell into place, he would ask Asli to marry him and they would start their lives together. They had it all planned out, down to the place they wanted to live, but it all would depend on him and how hard he would apply himself for that apprenticeship. And then there was convincing his parents they were ready for marriage. Duman on the other hand was relieved his grandma was coming, living under the watchful eye of his older sister wasn’t something he wanted to do.
So, the trip to Naples had been set, and Ates had met all the necessary requirements that were required for the school. She was so excited to take on this adventure, living out the dream that her mother had had at her age. She too had started writing about their lives when she was very young and had continued to that day, pouring out her heart into a notebook just like her mother. She hoped she could be half the writer her Mom was, as she read through the many notebooks her Mom had filled over the years since her and her siblings had been born.
Her eyes clouded with tears as she read, all her mother had gone through just to bring them into the world, all the troubles her parents had overcome for their love. That deep true love that no one could break.
She prayed for a love like that in her life……
Chapter 6
Ates headed down the road to her grandpa and Mihriban house, notebook in hand. She was going to miss him, and Mihriban, they had become such an important piece to the puzzle of her life. It was hard, and it still is hard, to be one part of triplets. Your thoughts always seemed to be known, in this special bond of siblings. As much as you try to be your own, you are still connected to one another. But her grandparents always tried to treat them differently, they never bought them all the same gift or gave her and Yilly the same clothes to wear, they kept them as individuals, letting each of their personalities blossom.
She wanted to spend as much time as possible with them before she left, with grandpa Aziz’s health, it wasn’t certain they would have much more time with him. He always demanded she read to him from her notebook when she visited him, and he was so proud of her, ” My dear Ates, you have enveloped your mothers amazing talent, and loving heart. You will be famous one day and travel the world.” He always told her with a smile. This day was nothing different, with him begging her to read aloud from her notebook. She would always start from the beginning, not wanting to leave out anything, it would make him happy to relive that time when the triplets were small. After more than an hour of reading, she looked to see he had fell asleep, as he always did, so she visited with grandma Mihriban for a while then walked home. Praying she would have many more times with the elder Divit. The next day she had planned to visit the Aydins for an all-day affair. The love from them was overwhelming, they didn’t expect her to read from her notebook, they never asked her about her schooling, they just wanted to spend time with her. They told her she was the carbon copy of their Sanem, so it was so comforting to them to have her there. They would cook, eat, visit with all the neighbors and Melahat would always shampoo and blow dry her hair while they talked. So the day always passed by quickly and before she knew it, it was time to go home. She hugged them both, her heart breaking, knowing it would be months before she could replicate this day. They were so proud of her, and they knew this was a great opportunity for her, but Mevkibe had reservations about her traveling so far away from home. ” Listen to me my sweet Ates, when I call you you will answer the phone, do not make me worry about you, my heart may not be able to stand it.” She whispered in her ear as they hugged goodbye. She waved and blinked back the tears as she walked away to catch the bus home.
Although she didn’t grow up here in this neighborhood, it was in fact her home. She loved everything about it and filed it away in her mind to write about in her notebook. She wanted this to be part of her first book, the life she had lived and the people that had shaped her. All the neighbors of her grandparents that had become more of a family to her, they would be the subjects and their life would create the story. She felt her real family was small, and she had always dreamed of a big noisy family, full of cousins, but that’s hadn’t been the case. Her aunt and uncle had stopped at one child, a boy, and he was six years younger then her. And now with everyone going their separate ways, her need to stay connected was stronger than ever. As she walked from the bus stop to her home, the thought of not doing this for a while hit her, she would be In a country she knew nothing about and a town that wasn’t her home, her heart suddenly felt empty and lonely. Could she do this, she wanted to so badly, so she would be strong and stand on her own. Maybe the family could come and visit, she thought, as a tear ran down her cheek, this was going to harder than she thought.
That evening her Mom and Dad prepared a meal just for her, all her favorite foods. They all tried to be excited for her but Duman was certainly not. Before the meal was over he had to excuse himself, with an excuse of homework. She hated that he was so upset, they had a close bond but this was bound to happen sooner or later. Their flight to Naples was at 10:10 the next morning, so the last-minute packing would keep her busy for a while. Yilly and Deniz would both go with them to the airport to see her off, but Duman had decided not to go, opting to say his goodbyes in private. As she walked down the hall to her room, she stopped and tapped on his door, ” Abi, can I come, I really need to talk.” It took a minute for him to reply, ” Yes, you can come in.” He responded his voice full of sorrow. They hugged forever, with hardly a word spoken…..but there didn’t need to be. She picked up the box of writing stationary she had bought him, ” You had better use this everyday to write me,” She told him, shaking the box at him. ” And I will write you back everyday. I promise.” He agreed, and she closed the door before the tears came.
Can and Sanem would spend a few days with her in Naples, getting her settled in, then they would continue on with their trip to Rome and then to Galapagos. Sanem tried to be excited about the trip, but her heart was to sad at the thought of leaving her daughter all alone in Italy. But she would get over it, and her and Can would have the trip of a lifetime, she was sure of it. They called their flight to board, and it was time for the final goodbyes. Yilly hugged Ates tight, ” Don’t do anything foolish, and stay away from the boys.” She said smiling at her sister. Deniz did the same, but whispered in her ear, ” Thanks a lot Abla, for leaving me alone with Yilly, I’ll get you back one of these days.” He gave her a kiss on the cheek, and turned away to hide his wet eyes. They both took their last minute orders from Can and Sanem before they the three of them boarded the plane. Sanem waved and blow them kisses, her eyes full of tears, she hated goodbyes. But for Can’s sake she wasn’t going to let it ruin their second honeymoon. She looked at her husband as they settled in their seats, how handsome and strong he was.
The feelings of longing hit her, and the thoughts of what was to come filled her mind…..
This was their starting over, their reset, and she felt like these memories would be the ones to fill her heart forever……..
Chapter 7
The next several days had Yilly and Deniz starting their classes at the university and Duman was returning to high school. He was extremely smart and had already passed the exam to enter the university in Istanbul the next year. He had his dreams of studying corporate law and being able to represent the agency. All the Divit children had big dreams and nothing would stand in their way. Can and Sanem had spent the last few days getting Ates set up in her small apartment, it was only 2 blocks from the school and seemed like a very safe neighborhood. Most of the people there were students in the 3 select schools that were there. She was so excited to get started, but Sanem was still apprehensive to say the least. Her own mothers’ traits were peeking out, the protectiveness, the demanding of control. Can smiled, pulling her aside, “Sanem, let her be, she has a very good head on her shoulders, and we have instilled all the right values in her, so I’m confident she’ll be able to handle herself.” She knew all of this, but there was still a part of her that wanted to protect her, stay there with her to make sure she was ok. Sanem nodded, ” You’re right babe, she’s a smart girl, and can take care of herself.” She grasped on to Can’s arm for support. With Ates all settled, they were ready to continue on with their trip, leaving out the next morning for Rome, and the start of the second half of this life of love.
Yilly was thankful that Mevkibe had come to stay with them, she was by far, the best cook in all of Istanbul. But giving orders to her brothers was what she was good at. Deniz took it all with a grain of salt, letting her have her say, then doing whatever he wanted, making Mevkibe laugh at times. Duman was more affected by her bossiness, he let it anger him, which would cause a bigger mess for Mevkibe to have to fix. But the grandmother had nothing but love for the three children and understood Yilly better than most. The need to control the situation had been part of her personality since she was a child herself, so she knew where Yilly was coming from. The young woman was a very smart and Mevkibe knew that one day she would be capable of running the agency, or any other company she wanted without fail. The next three weeks would be the test of all their patience, but she would have given up having this time with her grandchildren for anything in the world.
They had been in Rome for three days and had barely been outside of the hotel room. Her husband had turned back into that dashing and romantic, much younger acting man that had accompanied her on her first trip to Rome, 20 some years earlier. ” Can, let’s go out today, do some sight-seeing, buy some things. Maybe some gifts for the kids.” She never thought she would say it….but she needed a break. He agreed with hesitation, pleading with her to change her mind, ” Come on babe, I’m perfectly happy right her in the beautiful suite,…with you. She smiled at him, her heart melting at the look from his eyes. ” But we need to get out a bit, go to a restaurant to eat, maybe a movie”…..Agreed. ” Ok, but tonight is mine, got it.” He ordered, wrapping his long powerful arms around her. He pulled her in close to him, his breathing beginning to get deeper, as he sniffed in her scent. ” You totally render me useless.” he whispered gently in her ear, ” I have no will to resist you, so we will do as you want for now, but just beware when we get back.” She shivered with excitement at just the thought. Was she crazy, deranged, completely out of her mind for ever wanting to leave this room and this remarkable specimen of a man. She shuddered, ” Can, I think we should get ready, come on let’s go.” She gave him a kiss on the cheek.
They left Rome two days later, not having seen anything more outside of that room. But they both had their heart and soul full of love. The trip to Madrid, was short, but the 2 hour layover had them exhausted. By the time they made it to Guayaquil, Ecuador, they were ready for a weeks worth of sleep, but the flight in to San Cristobal Island, Galapagos was only a short wait. The excitement of finally being able to step foot on the land of her beloved Galapagos had given her new life, and before she knew it they were boarding the plane for the flight to the island. When the plane landed, she thought they would take a taxi to their hotel, but instead Can had one last surprise for her. The taxi drove them to the pier closest to the airport, where some of the most luxurious yachts were docked, ” Can what are we doing here, I’m ready to get to our hotel and start our sightseeing.” She said excitedly. He smiled, ” This is our hotel my love, I’ve chartered this yacht right here, fully stocked with a crew and food.” He replied, pointing at the beautiful ship in front of them. ” We will travel from Island to island for the next two weeks and explore each of them.” What do you think.” She blinked back the tears, just when she thought he couldn’t give her anymore, he does, and it’s always the best she could ever imagine. ” It’s perfect my love, just like you,…perfect.”
Her heart was beating hard as she boarded the yacht, it was magnificent, the most beautiful thing she had seen. It was a far cry from the boat that Can he sailed away on all those many years ago, this was pure luxury. She gasped at every sight as the captain gave them the tour of the yacht. Can’s eyes twinkled with love as he watched the astonishment in her face. He had made her happy…….she was in awe of it all. He wanted nothing more in his life than to be with her and feel the happiness that he could bring her. This was the start of their lasting memories years, the time they would cherish the most.
As the yacht set sail, and after she had unpacked their bags, they lounged on the deck watching the abundance of wildlife that inhabited the islands. ” Can I think I’m dreaming, am I, I hope not. This is the most romantic thing you have ever done, and I’ll never forget it.” She closed her eyes and reached for his hand. His eyes devoured her with the sight of her making him weak, as her face glowed with excitement. He wanted to make love to her right here, but he knew she would resist, so he pulled her close to him, and held her. ” We may never go home, let’s just stay here forever Mrs. Divit. You can write and I’ll take photos, and we can live like hermits.” He envisioned their life of lasting happiness right here. She smiled, ” Ohhh, Mr. Divit, don’t tempt me with your fatal charm. That would be something hard to resist.” She ran her fingers through his beard.
He swallowed hard, his desire for her had reached its limit,….” You, you’re the one thing I can’t resist……his eyes melted her, leaving her helpless in his arms.
” Then don’t, I’m here and ready for whatever you have in mind……
Yes, this would be a trip of Lasting Memories………
Chapter 8
The next day was more of a dream than reality, with them slowly drifting along, just skirting the edge of the small island of Floreana. This island is home to the Flamingo and to green sea turtles. Sanem was mesmerized by the large number of sea turtles that lived along the shoreline. They spent half of the day there while Can took hundreds of photos. Then they continued on to the largest island, Isabella. They lounged on the deck of the yacht, watching the birds fly from place to place, displaying a fantastic aerial show. Sanem had never dreamed she would actually witness such an amazing thing in person, let alone on the deck of a luxury yacht. As they anchored for the night, just a short distance from Isabella Island, the crew prepared their dinner. It was a romantic dinner, set on the top deck of the boat, it was a dinner fit for royalty. Can had definitely out done himself, ” Well, hows your trip so far,” he asked her, she sighed, ” it’s a dream, and I don’t want to ever wake up. Thank you for planning all of this for us.” With the dinner finished and the table cleared, they stretched out on the deck chairs, to watch the stars. She felt she couldn’t be happier, if someone had told her this was what her life would be one day, she wouldn’t have believed them.
The next days were filled with one adventure after another, as they visited each island, and made love under the stars each night. She had abandoned her feelings of uneasiness, determined to make this her trip of freedom. Can had welcomed this change, this release of her fears and hesitation. They spent the most time on Espanola Island, the nesting home of the Albatross. She was enthralled by the huge bird, unable to make herself leave. The first vision of the massive nesting site brought tears to her eyes, ” Can, this is more than I could have hope for, you have made my dreams come true.” She wrapped her arms around his neck, feeling as if nothing more mattered in her life but this moment. They took the small boat back to the yacht at the end of the day. Their lives had been recharged, they had connected again as one molded together again. She knew the trip was nearly over, and they would have to return home, but this would forever remain in her heart as their time of renewal. The time they were lost to one another seemed to be in a different dimension, so far from where they were now. She truly believed things happen for a reason, and that time in their life happened so they could arrive at this, a true deep love, meant to be by destiny. ” They Were One Soul”
The thought of going home was bittersweet, part of her never wanting to leave this place, and the other missing her children and home. ” My love, we will return, there’s nothing to stop us. We can stay as long as you want next time.” Can said, pulling her close to him. The need for him was so much stronger here, she couldn’t pull herself away. His lips electrified her, as he let his mouth glide over her skin. The touch of his tongue on her neck woke every sense inside her, and she excepted him. The love they shared on that yacht had been different, more intense than ever before, ” Can, let it be like this for the rest of our lives” she whispered, as he picked her up in his arms and carried her to their bed.
Mevkibe had loved taking care of the kids, Duman was the one that kept her company, with Yilly and Deniz off doing their own thing. Yilly was studying at the university library most of the time, and Deniz was at practice or with Asli. The month had passed quicker than she wanted, she wasn’t ready to go home. Can and Sanem would be home the next day, and everything would return to normal,….without Ates. Duman had already written her several letters, with returning a reply almost instantly. She was settling in, making friends and she loved the school. But that was as it should be, your children finding themselves and their passions. The return home would be hard for Sanem, she missed her daughter. They took a taxi home from the airport the next evening, instead of asking Emre to pick them up. They had arrived late, and the ride home would take some time, Can watched her as they rode along, ” My beautiful wife, we will get through this. I miss her too, but you knew we wouldn’t have them forever.” Just be happy for her.” Sanem knew he was right, and she was trying, ” I know, but right now it hurts, maybe if I call her in the morning it will be better, I just need to hear her voice.” Can smiled, ” Me too, so first thing in the morning.”
Everyone had stayed up waiting on them to arrive. Duman was the most excited to see them. He hadn’t been away from his parents that long, ever. Yilly was anxious to give them the report of all the happenings, and Deniz was just glad to see them. ” You mean you didn’t bring Ates back home with you?” Yilly spouted. ” I can’t believe you left her there Mom, I didn’t think you would.” Sanem smiled, ” I didn’t want to, but this is what she wants.” I respect it, just like I would respect what you want to do.” She patted her cheek, ” You have to let go.” Everyone was ready for a goodnights sleep, and for their lives to return to normal, so they all said their good nights.
Sanem couldn’t sleep, as she thought of Ates, and hoped she was ok. She had wanted to do the exact same thing when she was that age, but never had the means, so it made her proud that her daughter was strong enough to do just that. ” Stop thinking bad thing Sanem” her inner voice told her, ” She’s your daughter, smart and capable, everything will be fine.” For once she wanted to believe her inner voice……..but it still didn’t keep her heart from breaking. The next morning before breakfast, they called her, ” Ates, my love, how are you?” She asked. ” Mom, it’s wonderful, terrific, it’s more than I thought it would be.” She said, not letting her know how homesick she was for her and her family. ” I’m so glad honey, so your classes are good, you’re making friends?” She asked her. Ates swallowed hard, ” Oh yes Mom, everyone is so friendly here, and my teachers are great,….but I do miss you.” She replied, her voice cracking with emotion. Sanem and Can stayed strong, ” We miss you too, but you will be fine. Just think of the adventure you’re having.” Her Dad said, holding back the tears. She talked to the rest of the family and telling Duman how much she was enjoying his letters, ” I love them Abi, please don’t stop writing to me, and I won’t stop either.” After promising she would try to get home for her grandfather Aziz’s birthday, they hung up. Sanem felt like a weight had been lifted, she still needed her, she hadn’t flown away to another country and forgot her family. Can smiled, ” See she misses us as much as we miss her.” He kissed her on the forehead.
Sanem grabbed her notebook and took her place in the garden, writing and thinking of how her life had once again taken a change. How her heart was hurting, but yet so happy at where she was.
” One thing would never change.” She thought, ” The love for the man that never forgot her….
Chapter 9
Can was not so excited about returning to work, but Sanem was ready to come back to the agency on a part time bases which made him happy. He always worked better when she was there. While they were gone, one of their old customers had contacted them and wanted a meeting. Everyone in the office was thrilled, everyone but Can. Over the years, there had been a lot of changes for the agency, and they lost some of their top companies, some due to the accident and Can losing his memory. Some due to the relationship of Can and Sanem. Red Mode Cosmetics was one of those companies. The association with Enzo Fabri had cost them the largest account that the agency had ever acquired. It seemed like a hundred years ago to Can but in reality it had just been 23 years, and a lot of changes had come about in the cosmetic company. Mr. McKenna had stepped down as CEO of the company due to health problems and his association with Ceyda and Compass Sports were a thing of the past.
When Emre called the meeting that first morning after Can and Samen had returned from their trip Can had no idea what was about to happen. ” Ok everyone let’s welcome back my Abi and Sanem from their trip.” Emre said loudly, with everyone clapping. Can and Sanem smiled, “Thanks everyone, but I can’t say that I’m thrilled to be back. We have just experienced the most rewarding time in our lives, and the best vacation ever. The only thing that has made my return to work bearable is that Sanem has decided to return to work with me.” Can announced, with a huge smile. Everyone erupted in applause again. The agency was again back in full force, the team was reassembled and eager to take the agency to the top level. Then Deren made the announcement, ” We just received word that RedMode Cosmetics has requested a meeting with us, they would like for us to develope a top-notch campaign for their upcoming fall line.” She raised her hand immediately, ” Yes I know what happened in the past, and many of you here remember it as well.” But this a company under new management and leadership, so we have a chance to revive what we had with them years ago.” Can was in shock, just the mention of RedMode Cosmetics had a wave of panic through his body. Sanem quickly looked at him and could see the effect it had on him. That was one of the worst times in their relationship, the time that he had so wanted to forget. Yet there is was, again, staring him in the face. All the thoughts of Fabri, the perfume, the downfall of Aylin, all of those things were running rampant through his mind.
As they left the meeting room, Sanem reached out for Can’s arm, ” Can wait, are you ok? Her words seeming meaningless as Can turned to look at her, ” No, are you ok? Do we want to live with this again, the whole campaign, the memories of that time when we lost each other.” He spewed, his eyes filled with hurt. She knew the hurt all to well, that had been one of the hardest times in her life. It had been the cause of her leaving the agency and Can turning his back on her. “But it’s not the same, we’re not the same,” She told him, turning him to face her. ” It’s just business, it’s not Fabri, there’s nothing he can do to us.” She smiled, giving him a kiss on the cheek. Emre had no idea it would affect his brother the way it did, ” Abi, we can pass on the offer if it’s going to cause a problem for you and Sanem.” He said, seeing how visibly upset he was. Can shook his head, ” No Emre, Sanem is right, it’s not the same, so let’s work up the best campaign we can, and blow them out of the water.” He said, patting Emre on the back.
They dug out all the old files they could find on Red Mode Cosmetics and started to work, even though his heart wasn’t in it, he knew his mind needed to be. Yilly came to the agency every day after class, pitching in to help anywhere she could. When she arrived shortly after lunch, everyone was already deeply involved in the new presentation. ” Hey Dad, what’s going on, anything I can do to help.” She asked, pulling a chair around to sees what he was doing on the computer. Can turned the laptop for her to see, ” Well, a new cosmetic company has asked us for a presentation, so we are working on this.” She took the computer and started to study the layouts and the designs, ” Dad did you do this, or did Mom, because these really have a woman’s touch to them.” She smiled, looking across the room at her mother. Can leaned back, ” You know this stuff pretty good, don’t you.” It was you mother, of course, she had just handed it to me to review.” So, what do you think.” He asked. ” Well, I think you probably couldn’t get a more attractive format, the colors are great, and the slogan is very good.” Mom, you haven’t lost your touch.” Samen nodded, ” Well thank you my dear, I guess I should be flattered with such a compliment coming from the very talented Yildiz Divit.” She smiled and bowed. Yilly laughed, ” Yes, just wait, those words will be true one day, maybe sooner than what you think.” Can shook his head, ” Of that I have no doubt my dear, you already have some believers around here.” He replied.
With the meeting scheduled for the end of the week, they had little time to waste. So they took their work home with them, accepting all the help they could from their daughter. It seemed the three were bound to create a masterpiece. Can knew his daughter had a talent for advertising, but this project had brought out a whole different side of her, one that neither of her parents had ever seen before. Duman sat quietly in the room, observing, listening as he always did. He may not have the best relationship with sister, but he could tell she was good at what she was doing, making him feel even more out of touch with this family. They all seemed to have such talent, where was his, why did it seem like it had all passed him by. That feeling of being inadequate wasn’t something he liked, but being the youngest of the Divit clan, was anyone even interested in what he could do.
If there was one thing he knew…..
Being a quitter wasn’t something that was tolerated……..Not if you were a Divit..
Chapter 10
Sanem had the beginnings of a great campaign, now all they had to do was polish it up some and pick the slogan. It was very late, and they decided to call it a night and start fresh the next morning. Yilly had classes, so she turned in a little earlier, but not without contributing a few good ideas to the presentation. Can and Sanem both knew she would be an asset to the campaign when she came up with a slogan that would, in the end, become the meaning of Red Mode Cosmetics. Can held Sanem in his arms in bed, so happy that his wife had returned to work, ” It looks like you came back to work just in time.” He let his hand glide down her body. ” This new ad has your name written all over it.” He pulled her closer, “How did I get so lucky to marry the most talented woman in the world.” His mouth brushing against hers, making her shudder. She smiled slightly, ” I think our daughter is in fact the genius here, she delivered some great ideas tonight.” Can’s eyes had that look of desire, and he hadn’t heard anything she said, as he rolled over towards her, roaming over her face with his eyes, ” You are the only one I’m thinking about right now.” His body sliding over on top of her, and his breathing became fast and shallow. Sanem was helpless and at his mercy, as she felt her simmering desire for him begin to blaze deep inside her. His mouth on hers sent her over the edge, the softness of the kiss, but yet the demand of it made her weak. Within seconds she could feel the hardness of him press against her, ” You don’t know how much I want you right now, I hope this part of our lives will never change.” He whispered, feeling her relax into him and welcome all he had to offer.
He satisfied her like nothing else, and always would. She lay awake afterwards, watching him sleep, letting her mind slip back to that time in their lives of Fabri and all the hurt that they both had felt. She hoped this campaign didn’t bring up old wounds, causing them to fester into new ones. She had been a silly, naive girl back then, not trusting him to take care of himself. But her love was always there, bold and definite. She would have done anything for him, and did. She shook her head, as if to discard all her fears and doubts in her mind, one being the presence of Ceyda back then and everything she had to endure because of her. She had to keep telling herself, telling her heart, ” This is not the same, everything is different, including us.” Their love was strong, stronger than ever, and she wouldn’t let anything harm them. She fell asleep snuggled up against him, he gave her so much strength that she knew, they could outlast anything.
The night had not been a restful one for her, and her body felt it. Yet she was up early, getting Duman ready to leave for school. The neighbor down the road from them always drove him to school. Duman and their daughter had been classmates since the beginning of middle school and had become good friends. Although Duman was popular at school, he never had many close friends, but him and Yasmin had a special relationship. Her family had moved to Istanbul from Izmir a few years earlier and moved to a small farm down the road. They became instant friends and also the foundation of a lot teasing from his older siblings. But he never let that diminish their friendship, it only seemed to make it grow stronger. She heard the door open, ” Mrs. Divit, hello, is Duman ready.” Yasmin called to her, as she walked into the kitchen. Sanem smiled, ” Welcome Yasmin, he should be right down. How are you, you look beautiful.” She told her, watching the young girl blush a little. ” I’m great, and thanks.” She said her eyes shifting away from her in an embarrassing way. She was a tall, very slender girl, her hair was a honey golden color and she had eyes the color of the ocean. Sanem had always envied the unusual color of her eyes, they had that look of a fine cut stone. Duman came bounding into the kitchen, but stopped quickly, staring at Yasmin, ” Hi, didn’t know you were here already. Mom, see you tonight.” He said, giving her a small hug, and out the door they went. She stood there for a second trying to make sense of his odd behavior. Why had he seemed so nervous, she smiled, maybe her son was just beginning to see Yasmin for the beautiful girl she was.
Can and Yilly had already been discussing the campaign in the other room, and Yilly was determined to be at the first meeting with the company representatives. ” Dad, I just want to set in, I won’t talk, I’ll just listen.” She begged. Can looked at her sideways, ” Do you expect me to believe that my dear, there has never been a time when you just listened.” He gave her a look of warning, “I’ll see what everyone else thinks about it, I’m not promising anything, so don’t get your hopes up.” She squealed and grabbed her Dad around the neck, ” You are the best, and I love you.” Making it seem she had already been given permission. Sanem laughed as she walked in the room, ” I think your last sentence was a waste of breath, she going to that meeting.” She exclaimed, patting her husband on the cheek. She had been allowed to set in on other meetings with smaller accounts, and did have very good input, but this was a very big account and he didn’t want anything to go wrong.
By the time Can and Samen arrived at the agency, there was already a rush of activity. It seemed the new customers wanted an earlier presentation appointment, something to do with the CEO of the company and a trip abroad. Can didn’t like to rush a campaign, especially one this big, but he felt like they had a good start on it and they could be ready in two days. The team had already started their designing of the ad, and they selected the slogan that Yilly had given them the night before at home. Can was going over all the boards in their creative meeting, fine tuning the whole presentation, ” Well it looks like the best slogan may have come from Yilly, ” Creating the Face of Beauty” he looked around, ” Well, what do you think.” He asked. The room was silent for a second then everyone broke into applause, ” I think your right, we love it.” Deren said, feeling a bit jealous of the young girl.
Sanem had such a feeling of joy for her daughter. Proud was just not enough to describe how she felt. Yilly would for sure have a long and successful career in this advertising business. The talent that ran through her blood, came from her grandfather, and nothing seemed more fitting than for her to be there at the first presentation.
Can thanked everyone for their hard work, and him and Sanem walked back to his office, ” Well, I think we have a winner with this one.” He smiled, ” And I think we have a new head of the company in the making….
Chapter 11
Can and Sanem couldn’t wait to tell Yilly about her slogan being chosen for the presentation. They knew she would be overjoyed, and want to tell everyone, with her grandpa being the first. Yilly came in the door, ready to describe her ride home with her brother and tell her parents how disgusting her brother and his friends were, but before she could vent her anger Can held up his hand, ” Wait, I don’t want to hear anything negative right now.” He smiled at her, ” Do you still want to come to the presentation for RedMode.” he asked, watching her face change all shades of red. She stuttered, ” What, what, well,….yes I do, does that mean I get to.” She shouted, jumping up and down. Yilly hugged both her Mom and Dad, ” Are you sure, they didn’t mind.” She asked. ” No, and since your slogan was chosen for the campaign, they thought it only fitting that you should be there to take the credit.” Her Dad spouted, beaming with pride. She let out a scream that brought Duman running into the kitchen, ” Whats going on,” Yilly grabbed him and swung him around, ” My chose my slogan can you believe it, mine.” She yelled. Duman was happy for her and had never doubted it would happen. ” I’m going to tell grandpa, I’ll be back.” She took off across the lawn to their house.
All the excitement and happiness for Yilly made Sanem miss Ates even more. The three had always been each other’s biggest supporters, and to have one of them so far away at a time like this, made her regret letting her go. The thought had no more crossed her mind when her phone rang, she looked and saw it was Ates, ” Hello Ates, I was just thinking about you.” Sanem said, motioning Can to the phone. ” Mom, I miss you all so much, I don’t know if I can do this. I feel lost, what am I going to do.” She heard her daughters voice crack with emotion. Sanem’s heart sank, ” First of all, are you sick, do you feel bad.” She asked, trying not to feed her daughters feelings of loneliness. She answered, ” No, I’m not sick,….I just feel awful inside, like I’m missing out on everything.” She sighed. Sanem had to be strong, ” Are you wanting to come home, if you do that means you lose your spot there in the school. Are you prepared for that.” She asked. Her daughter was as strong willed as anyone she knew and had known what she wanted in life since she was a very small child but following your purpose in life is not always easy. ” No,…I don’t think I want to come home, I just needed to hear everyone’s voice.” Ates took a deep breath, “Ok, I’ll be fine, just let me talk to Dad for a minute, but I want to talk to you again before we hang up.” Sanem handed the phone to Can, shaking her head, ” Here Dad, she’s missing us.” She winked at him and whispered, ” Help her stay strong.” Can took the phone, his heart breaking for his daughter, but was determined to help her through this. ” Hello my sweet girl, what has you so sad.” His own voice coated with sadness.
Their talk was emotional but Can knew if she gave in now, she wouldn’t get another chance like this for a while, ” Hey, I’m going to say what your momma would say, ‘ release all these feeling onto paper, it will make it easier to deal with her Dad replied, wanting to do nothing less than hop of the next plane there and bring her home. Ates sighed, ” You’re right, that’s what I’ll do, I’m just feeling a bit disconnected, that’s all. Hey what’s Yilly up to, I don’t hear her trying to butt in to the conversation.” She laughed, beginning to feel a bit better. ” Ah, well your sister has some news, but I’ll let her tell you herself, she’s at your grandpas right now, but I’m sure she will call you as soon as she gets back to tell you the news. Ates gasped, ” I knew it, I had a feeling something was happening, that’s why I felt so sad.” Is it good news?” She asked, wanting to be prepared. ” Yes, when is it not good news when your sister concerned.” Look your little brother is dying to talk to you, so do as I said, I’m sure it will help.” We’ll talk soon.” Can handed the phone to Duman, he grabbed it and hurried off to the other room. Can laughed, amused at how much the boy had always depended on Ates to solve his problems. After saying her goodbyes to her mother and promising to call back if she felt lonely again, they hung up. Sanem was fighting with that feeling of protector, wishing she could go to Naples and rescue her, bring her home and shield her from the pangs of growing up, but she knew Ates would find her way. They both smiled as Yilly came bounding back through the door, her face lit up with happiness ” Grandpa is so proud of me” she shouted, grabbing her phone from the counter, ” I have to call Ates, she’s gonna be so happy for me.”
And so it goes,….just one of the many times in their lives that they shared with exact other. That bond between the triplets was stronger than ever as they grew older, that need of acceptance always in their hearts. Deniz was not the exception, as soon as he walked in the door, he asked, ” What’s going on, I just had a feeling something happened on my way home is everyone ok.” He said, with a look of concern on his face. His mother patted his arm and gave him a slight hug, ” Everything fine son, Yilly just got some good news today, and she’s dying to tell you about it.” He breathed a sigh of relief, “Ok, geez,….I knew there was something, just wasn’t sure what.”
The Divit triplets…..all so much their own, but yet the same. Deniz called from the other room, “Mom, I’m going to call Ates, do you think it’s too late.” I feel like I need to hear her voice.” He said, as he listened to his brotherly instincts. Sanem’s heart couldn’t have happier as she watched and listened to the three children she had given life to. The need of one for the other would never go away, or be replaced with someone else, she only felt a sadness for Duman. He had been a child of his own, even though his older siblings loved him with all their hearts, he was always on the outside looking in, when it came to that connection and bond.
She took her notebook and found her spot in the garden, her heart so full of love. She let the words drop onto the page, like the tears of happiness that filled her eyes. Can had made her life what it was, one person, one man had been the reason of her existence.
The next years of her life would be the best,…..she was ready to see her babies grow into adults
She hoped they never stopped needing them, or each other…..
Chapter 12
The presentation to the cosmetic company had been a success. The Head of Advertising. Ilker Sahin, was the first one to praise Yilly for the slogan and he told Can he had never seen such talent in a person so young. The compliments kept coming from the group that come to represent RedMode, Sales Director Tubba Guler, insisted Yilly be the one to work on the campaign, just to make sure they got the full effect of the slogan. Yilly was on cloud nine, and Sanem could not have been happier. When did a twenty years old ever get an opportunity like this,….when you are part of one of the most successful and talented families in Istanbul, that’s when. After the meeting that lasted much longer than expected, Can took Yilly to his office, “Shut the door my dear and have a seat, we need to have a serious conversation.” Her father motioned at the chair across the table from him. Her heart skipped a beat, her mind thinking he wasn’t going to let her work on this campaign. Can stared at his daughter with a look of concern, ” I know you think this is a wonderful turn of events, and you received a lot of praise in there, but….the demand on you to deliver a spectacular campaign for this company is a lot higher than just coming up with a catchy slogan. He saw his daughters face turn cold…and fill with determination. She had every intention of fulfilling that demand.
ONE YEAR LATER……
” Deniz, if you go into the Cooplearning sector, what will happen with your basketball commitments.” Can asked him, as they sat at his desk. Deniz had called his Dad that day right after lunch, ” Hey Dad, if you,re not too busy, I really need to go over something with you.” Can I stop by in about an hour.” Can knew it must be important for him to come to the agency, and not wait until he got home, ” Sure son, I’m never too busy to see you.” He replied. He never expected what he heard. His son had been selected to enter the Cooplearning, meaning he had some of the top grades in his class and the number one Engineering firm in Istanbul was interested in taking him under their wings. ” You have a basketball scholarship, are they willing to release you from that.” Can asked, a bit confused at what his son was suggesting. ” Yes, they weren’t too happy about it, but with my grades being at the top of the class, a working internship is the best possibly for me.” And they are in the business of producing a career for us, not a sport.” He spouted with a bit of sarcasm but regretted the remark as soon as it came out of his mouth. Can shot him a look, ” I’m fully aware of the purpose of schooling, and I don’t need you to inform me of its importance.” I’m merely concerned about you fulfilling your intentions for the school.” Deniz lowered his head, ” Sorry Dad, that was rude and uncalled for.” After a long discussion Can told him they would talk it over with his mother that evening at home. He wanted to think about it alone for a while. His children had all taken on such huge opportunities, Yilly had almost taken over the creative department of the agency, with the huge success of the cosmetic account, and Ates was at the top of her class, well on her way to publishing her first book, and now this.
After Deniz left, he called for Sanem to come to his office. ” Can what’s wrong.” She sat down on his desk front of him, ” Did you get bad news” she asked, stroking his face with her hand. He sighed, ” What happened Sanem, how did all of our children become so talented and in demand.” He laid his head in her lap, and she ran her fingers through his hair. ” Well, I’m not sure what you’re talking about, but I think our kids are brilliant, so why wouldn’t they be in high demand.” She replied back to him in a joking way. The look from her husband told her he wasn’t in a joking mood. ” Can, what is it. Did Deniz do something wrong.” She asked. He shook his head, ” No, he’s just doing everything right.” It seems like he is skipping the most important things in life. It seems the top engineering firm, WGI Engineering, wants him for their Cooplearning segment of the company.” Sanem clapped her hands together, ” Wow, that’s great, and why are you upset about it.” She asked, raising his face to look into his eyes.. ” Sanem do you realize if he is noticed by a firm such as WGI now, he will be able to work anywhere in the world within 5 years. I’m not sure if I’m ready for all of this.” She saw the tears form in his eyes. ” We need to discuss it with him tonight,…I know it’s the best thing for him, but where did the time go, what happened to those little kids that where always arguing. Being a parent is getting harder and harder.” He replied, kissing her hand.
With Yilly in charge of the cosmetic account, the next faze of the campaign was being developed, and she was just as demanding and particular as Deren. It had been a challenge for Deren to move over and let this young woman have some control, but the customer was the one that insisted on the young woman to head their campaign. She took this responsibility very serious, scaling back her classes at the university to mostly online classes, so she could spend most of the day at the agency. Her talent was not to be overlooked, as the RedMode campaign was being recognized as a major advertising accomplishment. It was bringing more and more recognition to the agency, as two more top companys in Istanbul asked for a fresh new look for their company’s. Things were definitely looking up for the agency.
Ates was starting her second year in Naples and had conformed her life around her writing. The school had been nothing more than a stepping stone in her career. She had presented her own notebooks, that told the story of the life of the Divit triplets, to a publishing house on London. She was waiting impatiently for word from them, “Mom, it’s been a month since I sent the transcript to them, how long does it take.” She asked her mother. Ates had been home for a week, taking advantage of the spring break. But the thoughts of her book were all that consumed her. Sanem knew the feeling well, rethinking the time in her life that had been dependent on her writing. The time that Can was gone from her life and she was trying to survive from a broken heart, and her book was all that kept her alive. The memory of him and what they had together, had been left in the hands of Yigit. She regretted that, for no other reason than the loss of trust that crept between them, sending Can away from her and their love.
Ates was much more of a writer than herself, she wrote from her heart, searching for all the answers.
Sanem had always written from her soul, already knowing all the answers……..
Her babies,…those Divit triplets, as they had always been known, were well on the way of making a name for themselves……..
Chapter 13
Yilly rarely went a day without a visit to her grandpa Aziz, just to talk over the events of the day. He was probably the only person that she felt the need to ask for advice from, not that she didn’t value the guidance from her Dad and uncle, but there was something about Aziz that she understood. He made her see it all herself instead of suggesting what she should see. It was all about the vision, he would say, ” Seeing it all in your head is the best place to invent a winning presentation.” She took it to heart, sitting for hours alone in the meeting room with the lights out, searching her mind for the visual interpretation of the next campaign. Can was aware of how much she depended on her grandpa, and he wondered how she would handle the day when he had to say goodbye to this life, he even wondered how he would handle it. This career of the advertising business was a hard business to master, but if anyone could, it would be the granddaughter of Aziz Divit.
It was really hard to imagine this woman that was standing in front of the room, delivering a presentation to the largest Housing Developer in Turkey, was his 21 year old daughter, and she had everyones attention. The presentation was nothing short of fantastic, and the customers sighed the deal immediately, placing Fikr’i Harika on top of the advertising sector. With a world famous cosmetic company and now the largest Housing Developer in the country, they were on their way of becoming just what Yilly had always promised, the most sought after agency in Turkey, and she was quickly becoming the most talked about creative advertising person in town.
Deniz had accepted the apprenticeship at WGI Engineering, and within a few months had already turned the heads of the top executives. He had always loved to build things, it started when he was little, with his first erector building set, and it flourished into an obsession. He was always wondering and asking had these big skyscraper building were put together. They always knew he would work on building things, and probably some of the largest building in the world. His talents had never been overlooked, and before the end of the first year, he was hired on full time as a designer. His dreams were coming true, now all there was left was to marry the woman that held his heart. Sanem had always known he would go after whatever he wanted with a vengeance, so if he wanted to work at WGI, then it was inevitable that it would happen. His Dad was a bit more reserved about it, ” Deniz this is such a demanding job, so much responsibility on your shoulders, are you sure you want to accept it all right now.” His father asked. ” Dad, this is all I’ve ever wanted to do, and I think I’m good at it. We all have to take on what challenges us, or the fire that drives us will die.” He stated, hoping his Dad would understand. Can knew the desire and drive from doing what you love, it had been the same with him for photography, and he had jumped into that with both feet and never looked back. So he gave his son his blessing and wished him well, just as his father had done for him when he started off to Africa, so many years ago, on his first assignment.
When it came to Ates, the months that passed without a word from a publish company, the more deflated she was. She stayed on in Naples, finishing out her last year at the school. But she was losing hope for her first book deal. Sanem tried to assure her, ” My dear, sometimes it takes time for that perfect fit. There will be a publisher that will love what you write and be willing move mountains to get it published, and until then, you keep writing, keep your emotions flowing.” Sanem wished she had taken another road when it came to her first book. But the second book, she had done it all on her own, just happening onto a great publishing house and the perfect publisher. It was just a matter of time before Ates Divit would be an author with offers coming in from all over the world, Sanem was sure of it. The first publisher that Ates had contacted was in London, they gave her words of encouragement, but felt it was to early for a book offer. They wanted another few chapters, just to see where the story line was going. With the story being mostly about her life, she had to produce a fictional outcome for the ending. Much like Sanem had to do with her first book about The Phoenix and The Albatross. She knew her parents story, and to be able to write an ending as compelling as their life, would be close to a miracle. She wanted to take a few weeks off from school, go home and connect with her life again, maybe, just maybe she could find the right words to put that special ending to her story.
The university had accepted Duman, before he had finished his last year of high school. He started at the Istanbul University Faculty of Law while he finished the last two months of high school online. He studied hard the first few months, graduating high school with honors and taking the maximum amount of hours at the university. His drive and ambition was something he had been born with, it came as part of the package when you were a Divit. He represented the name well in the university, winning most every award he could. This was the only way he knew to compete with his siblings, the Divit triplets. They were all so dynamic and different, each of them possessing excellence in whatever they were doing. He intended to make the most of this opportunity, Duman had his sights set on being one the top corporate lawyers, and taking care of the family business.
With Ates home for a while, their house seemed normal and whole again. Can and Sanem couldn’t have been more proud of their children, but to hear the bickering and arguing again, brought back the memory of what had passed. Would these children ever be any more than that, would they ever find that place of calm and acceptance of one another.
” Can, when will Yilly learn to leave Ates alone.” Sanem asked her husband. They had been listening to the two debate loudly, on how to properly phrase a certain sentence, for over an hour. They were sitting in their favorite spot in the garden, reliving the many times that this had happened. Yilly, was of course, the dominate one here and always thought her way was the right way, but Ates was defending what she knew was right, so it was up to Sanem to settle the argument. Sanem called the two sisters out to the garden, ” I have been listening to you two argue for a while now, and I think we should let Ates write it the way she sees it,…… “But Mom, Yilly started, as Sanem held up her hand to silence her, “Yilly, it’s Ates’ book, she knows how she wants it to sound, so she can write it the way she wants.” She sighed, shrugged her shoulders, “Ok, you two are the writers, so let it be the way she wants.” Ates smiled, ” Thank you Yilly, I’m so glad you realize that.” Another battle won, at least that’s the way Ates felt about it….
Can smiled at his wife, ” And why were we missing our children.” Maybe it’s time for us to take that one last trip. Maybe to a beach somewhere, and your in that skimpy little bathing suit I like so much.” He leaned over, letting his fingers slid down her leg……
She shivered slightly. Some things would never change…
That feeling of a thousand butterflies in flight,…….with his single touch
Chapter 14
Over the next months, it seemed whatever the Divit children did turned to gold. Deniz was quickly becoming the top engineer in the company, with the designing of the high tech building for one of the oldest companies in Istanbul. The design would take them into the future with some of the features that had only been dreamt of a short time ago. Deniz was making a name for himself… He still wanted to fulfill the rest of his life plan, and that was to marry Asli and build there own life together. He had taken the afternoon off, and called his Dad, ” Dad, are you free for lunch today, I would really like to talk over something with you.” He fidgeted nervously with the pen in his hand. ” Good morning son, I have a meeting at 11:00, it shouldn’t last any longer than an hour, and then I’m free. Do you want to come here and order in, or go out.” Deniz cleared his throat, ” I just don’t want to be interrupted, I want to talk to you without someone walking in on us.” So maybe we should meet at Assk Kahve, it not to far from the agency, and it’s fairly private.” Oh,….don’t tell Mom, she may get upset that I didn’t invite her.” He told him, feeling the nerves penetrate through him. Can didn’t like to keep anything from Sanem, and he wasn’t sure how he could, but it seemed to be important to his son, so he would manage.
Yilly always had everything covered when it came to the campaigns so he knew she would take care of the afternoon brainstorming meeting for the possible new client. This would make the second large company for the agency in the last 6 months. The word of the fresh new ideas that were coming from the agency was getting around, and everyone seemed to know about Yildiz Divit. She didn’t like it much when the clients would call her Yilly, she thought it was much to juvenile, so she insisted on Yildiz. But there was still the people in the office that refused to call her anything but Yilly. He tried to make an excuse to Sanem about what he was doing, but couldn’t, so he confessed, ” Look, Deniz called and wants to meet me for lunch, I think it’s important but private, if you know what mean.” He said, giving her a wink. ” He didn’t want me to tell you, because he didn’t want you upset that he didn’t invite you.” Sanem shook her head, “Oh,…a private talk, hmmm.” Can, do you think it’s about Asli.” She looked at him with the tears welling up in her eyes. ” I don’t know what else it would be, so just be ready for it.” He wiped the tear from her face and gave her a kiss on the cheek. ” I’ll be back this afternoon, and don’t worry, he has a good head on his shoulders and I’m sure he’s thought everything out.”
Deniz sent a message to him, telling him they had reservations for 12:30, and he had asked for a table on the deck. Can was more amused than curious, his son was going to great lengths to tell him something he already knew. But he would go along with his sons plan. The meeting with the charity group ran a little longer than anticipated, with a few of the women trying to railroad him into a photo session with them. There always seemed to be a booklet or a pamphlet that needed to be made and they either wanted him to take the shots or be the subject of the photos. And then there was the excessive and obvious flirting that always made him uneasy. By the time he made it to the cafe, Deniz was already there and waiting. ” Sorry son, the traffic was horrible and the meeting ran long.” He shook his hand and gave him a slap on the back. Deniz was visibly nervous as he ran his fingers through his hair, ” I figured as much Dad, I know how the traffic can be.” He rambled. Can knew the feeling his son had, the feeling of knowing what you wanted, but revealing it to everyone was hard. ” Dad,….look, you know my job is going very well, I am making very good money. I,…we, well…Asli and I have been thinking of getting married,….No,….Dad, I’m in love with Asli, and I want to ask for her hand.” He spouted, letting out a heavy sigh. Can couldn’t help but laugh, ” Son, why was that so hard. I’ve known for a long time that this day would happen, and I knew coming here exactly what you wanted.” Can reached for his hand. ” Deniz, your life has always been what you wanted it to be, you have orchestrated it perfectly. We couldn’t have wished any more for you than what you wish for yourself. We love Asli, and if she is what makes your life complete, than I think you should be having this talk with her parents.” Deniz smiled at his Dad, he knew he would understand, ” Thank you Dad, but what about Mom, will she feel the same.” He asked. Can nodded, ” I have a feeling she already does.”
They took the next couple of hours talking over the plans Deniz and Asli had for their lives. This boy of his had immigrated into this man of integrity and independence. So humble and real, and so much like his mother. He had already found the land to build their house on, it was close to the sea, and not to too far from the farm. Can knew Sanem would be happy about that. ” So when are you going to ask for her hand, your mother and I will have to go along you know.” He told him. Deniz smiled, ” As soon as possible, I’m ready to make it official.” Deniz looked at his Dad with seriousness, ” We all know the story of you and Mom, but why did you wait so long to ask her to marry you.” Why didn’t you just run off and get married” Can’s heart sank, just to think about all those years that he had wasted, the time they ran away from each other, it seemed like a bad dream. He smiled slightly at his son, ” We were going to, but your grandmothers stopped us, and we were both foolish enough to let it happen. Then all the bad things that were caused by bad people, forced us apart. But never once did it make us doubt our love for each other.” Deniz watched his Dad as his face told him how much he loved his mother, ” So, the time you were apart, you still loved her.” He asked. Can looked out across the sea, ” Son, there’s hasn’t been a day since the first time I touched your mother, that I haven’t loved her.” Deniz frowned, ” What do you mean,….the night at the opera house.” You fell in love with her then.” His son asked him.
The memory of it all came flooding back, and how happy he was to remember it. The time after the accident had been the worse time of their lives, as his mind had refused to relive that time.
“Yes, that night that changed my life,” he said, letting the scene play out in his head. ” But you never even saw her face Dad, how did you know.” His Son asked him.
” Sometime your greatest love comes before you even see it…..
Chapter 15
Deniz had made his plans, he would go by Asli house on his way home that afternoon and ask her parents for a engagement time. He hoped they agreed to a quick meeting so he could put that part of it behind him. Asli parents loved Deniz, he had been part of there family for almost five years. They included him in all their family functions, and had known for a while now, that they would be losing their daughter to him. Asli’s mother had been much like Sanem’s mother, quite taken with him. She doted on him shamelessly, so she was overjoyed as she listened to what Deniz had to say, ” Mrs. Keskin, Mr. Keskin, I have come to request an engagement time, if you would allow me.” He stated, hoping they would agree. Her mother, Serap, smiled and looked at her husband. Asli father was a bit more reserved, ” Why has you father not come with you to request this time.” Is that not a custom within your family.” He asked, holding that look in his eyes. Deniz swallowed hard, he had known her father would be the one to oppose, ” My father had business to attend to, but has given me his blessing to follow through with this request. Her father lowered his head, ” I expect your parents to be present for the engagement, that’s our tradition, are they fine with that.” He said, making it sound more like a demand than a question. Deniz bowed his head, ” Of course, they will both be accompanying me.” He assured them.
Yilly meet her Dad in the hallway with the first set of plans for the new campaign. One of the largest restaurant chains in Istanbul had wanted to refresh its look and had asked the agency to be in charge of that. Yilly follow her Dad into his office, ” I need you to look at these,” she said, shoving the stack of focus boards in front of him, ” This is what we came up with, tell me what you think.” Can sat down, ” No,…you tell me what you think, which one do you think better serves the customer.” He asked her, watching her face. She tilted her head, ” Well, this one is very good,” she replied, pulling the one from the top and handing it to her father. ” And,…who’s work is this.” He looked over the presentation, very impressed with what he saw. Yilly crossed her arms, ” The new guy, Ozan, he’s really quite good.” Can quickly looked up, he had never heard his daughter praise anyone, especially someone new. ” It’s very impressive, what did Deren think.” He asked, studying her face. ” She agreed, he’s very talented,….so shall we elaborate on this idea. He could see the flicker of interest in her eyes. ” It’s your call, you know what’s best, trust your instincts.” She smiled, grabbed the designs and hurried out the door. Sanem was coming in as she was going out, ” Yilly, slow down, did your father make the decision.” She asked. ” No,…I did.” She yelled back to her, as she bolted off down the hall.
Sanem looked confused, ” Whats up with that girl now, she has been bouncing around the office like a ball all day.” Can motioned her over to his chair, pulling her down on his lap, ” I think she is infatuated with the new copywriter,…whats his name…..Ozan.” He whispered to her. She looked at him blankly, ” Can, we’re talking about Yilly, our daughter. She only has work on her mind.” She replied, tapping him on the nose with her finger. He smiled, ” No,….I’m right about this, I saw that sparkle in her eyes, and she complimented him.” He emphasized, raising his eyebrows. Could it be, her daughter was actually acting like a normal woman, and not an advertising fanatic. They both laughed at the possibility….. “Can, how did the talk with Deniz go.” She asked. He took her hand, ” I was right, he wants to marry Asli, and he has gone to setup a time for us to visit her family with a request of engagement.” He told her. He watched her face change to a hundred different looks in a matter of seconds. Her son is getting married, the thought hit her like a brick. Even though she knew it was a possibility. “Sanem, babe are you ok,…you knew this was going to happen, right.” He asked, seeing the tears well up in her eyes. She quickly turned her head.
Deniz and Asli’s parents had set the time, the next evening at 7:00pm. Asli smiled at him as he kissed their hands, and hugged her before leaving. ” We will see you tomorrow evening, and thank you.” He said as he left. Now, to tell his mother, another task he wasn’t looking forward to.
It was early in the evening when he got home, and they were just sitting down to dinner when he came in. ” Ahh, just in time for food.” He said jokingly. Nothing was said during dinner, but afterwards they all went to the garden. It was almost a nightly thing for them, when the weather was good. Sanem had came to terms with what was happening with her children, but she wasn’t sure if she was going to like it. Deniz knew this was the time, he had to tell them his plan. ” Mom, Dad, we have an invitation to Asli’s house tomorrow evening at 7:00.” Mom, I have Dads blessing, do I have yours?” He asked, looking into this mother’s eyes. Yilly spouted, ” An invitation for what, dinner,….so why would you need Moms blessing.” Whats going on.” She demanded, her voice sounding frantic. Can stood, ” Deniz will be asking for Asli’s hand for marriage, and we all wish them both the best.” He stated, looking hard at Yilly. Deniz looked at his mother, ” Mom, will you give us your blessing,… you know how I feel about her, please don’t make me regret it.” He reached for her hand, his eyes full of tears. She smiled, ” My dear son, you have my blessing and my love, both of you. Just stay close to us, if you can.” She hugged this man, that was once a child, that was now the sum of her and the man she loved. He was just a devoted as his father and just as sincere as she, what more could you ask for in a man……..
With all the tears and hug done, Yilly gave him a special hug, ” So,…you are going to be the first one to leave us.” She said, holding back the tears. ” Just know this, you will never get rid of me, no matter how far you go. I am part of you, So just make sure Asli knows that and we’ll all be fine.” She stated, wiping away that single tear that slid down her cheek.
Duman shook his hand, ” I’m happy for you both, but if you don’t call Ates right now and tell her, you won’t be able to get married.” He said jokingly.
Deniz yelled, ” Oh my god, Ates. He grabbed his phone, not even considering the time, and called her. At the first ring she answered, ” Deniz, I was just going to call you. Is there something going on, I feel like somethings happened.” She asked in a panic.
” Yes, Abla, but it’s something good, in fact, it’s the best news ever…….
Chapter 16
The news from Deniz made Ates happy but sad at the same time. She loved Asli and knew that they were meant to be together, but sad she was so far away from all their happiness. She promised him she would be home long before the wedding to join in all the festivities. After all the congratulations we’re done, she stayed on the phone with her mother, ” Mom, the publishing house in London accepted the last few chapters I sent to them, and they have offered me a book deal with a contingency for the next five chapters. Ates sounded excited, but yet she felt unsure about the deal. Sanem knew they were probably being so cautious, because of her age, and this being her first book draft, ” If you take this offer, it can benefit you as well as them, if you send them the next chapters as they ask, and they except them, then great but if you don’t like the offer then you also can back out. So it gives you a say in what happens. Ates felt better about it after talking to her, and decided to send the next five chapters. Sanem suggested she send the transcript to Bedir, her old publisher. They had kept in contact with each other over the years after her last book, and she knew he would look at it objectively. Ates was hesitant to use her mother’s name to gain a book deal, but maybe that was the only way. She agreed to send the draft to him just to see what would happen. Bedir had his office in Milano, Italy, which was where he was when Sanem worked with his, but he had also setup an office in Bern, Switzerland. Ates was anxious to send the draft, but wanted to make sure he didn’t make a decision based on her mother.
The engagement party couldn’t have been any better, with Asli’s father shocking everyone and tearfully handing over his daughter to Deniz. Can and Sanem both were welcomed into their family with open arms. Can watched so proudly as Deniz excepted each of their traditions as his own, just as he had done so many years ago with Sanem’s parents. He knew his son’s feeling were as strong for Asli, as his was for their mother, and he would do anything to make Asli his. The similarities in their relationships were uncanny, and he hoped they weren’t met with all the obstacles that him and Sanem were met with over the course of the years before they were married. As he looked at his wife, happily hugging and welcoming their new daughter into the family, he knew without a shadow of a doubt, he would do it all over again, to assure him the happiness he had now.
Deniz took this opportunity to tell them all that he had bought a small piece of land not far from the farm, and they had intended to build their home there, with construction starting immediately. Sanem was overjoyed to have them be so close to them. The wedding date was set, for three months away, so they would rent a small apartment in town until their home was built. Her parents wanted them to live there with them until the house was ready, but Deniz stood strong and insisted it be his way. Her parents accepted. Sanem remembered the fiasco of her sister and Emres wedding and didn’t want anything like that to happen here, so they didn’t make any type of demands on the couple, other than, to be happy. But of course there was the list of traditional happenings that Asli would have to go through, and those would start almost immediately. With the wedding three months away, things would have to go smoothly.
As the next few weeks passed, and the upcoming wedding was getting closer, everyone was focused on just one thing, Deniz and Asli. So Duman kept the fact that he was winning every award possible at Law school, under wraps. He had just been awarded a prestigious Award of Excellence and there would be a ceremony to present the award, so the President of Istanbul University Faculty of Law called Can to congratulate him on his son’s accomplishments, ” Mr. Divit, I’m sure you’re aware of how well your son is doing in our school, but there will be an award ceremony to deliver the Award of Excellence to Duman on Friday, and I hope that each member of his family can attend.” He said. ” This is a very important award for anyone to receive, and this, along with all the other awards he was received, will definitely place him on the road to being able to work in any law firm in the country. Can was embarrassed, confused but most of all hurt that his youngest son had kept all of this from them. ” Thank you so much, and yes we will all be attending the ceremony.” He told him.
He walked done the hall to the archive room where Sanem was working, ” Babe, has Duman said anything to you about winning any awards at school.” He looked at her with doubt. She shook her head, ” No, I really haven’t had much time to talk to him about school lately, why,….what’s going on.” She asked, seeing the concern in his eyes. ” Well I just got off the phone with President Tekin and it seems that Duman has been keeping a lot of things from us.” Can squinted his eyes, making Sanem feel uneasy. Sanem gasped, ” Duman,…is he in trouble in school, are his grades bad.” She asked. Can half smiled, ” No, it seems he has won just about every award possible, and has just been awarded the Award of Excellence.” He announced to his wife. ” Duman,….why hasn’t he said anything, when did this happen.” She asked, just as confused as Can. “I’m not sure, but there’s an award ceremony on Friday and they will be awarding it to him then.” Mr. Tekin wanted to make sure we would all be there.” He said, shaking his head. ” I can’t believe he has kept this from us all this time.” I’m not sure if I’m happy or upset.” He stated.
That evening at home, Can filled Yilly and Deniz in on all that had been going on with their brother, ” It seems Duman is a the top of the class in school, has already won numerous awards and will be presented with the Award of Excellence at a crermony on Friday, did either of you know about any of this.” He asked, questioning them. They both looked stunned, ” No Dad, we had no idea.” They said, just as Duman walked in. “Hello, what’s going on,” he asked as they all turned to stare at him. ” Do you have anything to tell us Duman, anything you’d like to share.” Sanem said, crossing her arms. Duman’s face turned white, ” Uhh, I’m not sure I know what you mean Mom,” he stuttered, ” Have I done something wrong.” He couldn’t have felt worse, if he was standing in front of a firing squad. Can put his arm around him, “Son, why have you not told us about all the awards you have been presented with, and now the Award of Excellence.” Were you going to tell us.” He asked. Duman took a breath, ” Oh,.. that. I just didn’t want to distract you all from Deniz and Asli’s wedding. It’s no big deal.” He stated, shrugging his shoulders. They all stared at him in disbelief, ” No big deal” they all shouted at the same time.
Sanem faced her youngest son, ” Where did you get that idea, anything you do is a big deal.” We are so proud of you, don’t ever think we’re not.” She told him, her eyes filling tears.
Had they been so focused on the triplets, that they had overlooked this beautiful young man. He was so much a sum of them both, and probably more sympathetic than any of them…..
She felt she was just seeing her son for the first time…….
Chapter 17
Ates regretted the fact she would have to miss the ceremony for Duman. There had been the end of the year exams and she couldn’t miss them, but she talked to him on the phone, ” Duman you know how proud I am of you, but I’m also upset with you. Why didn’t you tell me about all the awards.” She asked him. Duman had always been use to something going on with one of his siblings that demanded everyone’s attention, so whatever was going on with him seemed insignificant. ” Ates, really I didn’t think it was anything,….so I won a couple of awards. It’s nothing compared to what Yilly is doing at the agency, or Deniz getting married, or you getting a book deal. That’s why I didn’t mention it.” She couldn’t believe what she was hearing, ” Since when are you’re accomplishments not important, you are always important to me. Look I can’t get there for the ceremony, but I’m coming home next week and we’ll celebrate then, anything you want to do.” She explained, making him promise he wouldn’t keep anything from her again. With everyone one in attendance on Friday evening, the University presented the Award of Excellence to Duman Divit. The couple couldn’t have been more proud of their youngest son, as they watched the faculty of the school all congratulate him. Even some of the most influential people of Istanbul were in attendance and was shaking his hand and giving him praise. At nineteen, and completing his first year of law school with honors, Can was in awe, how did he miss the shaping of this boy into a man, when did all of this occur. He felt a twinge of regret in his heart for not taking more time with him, but he had always seemed as if he didn’t need it. How wrong could a father be.
Ates had requested for Duman to pick her up from the airport, eager to spend some alone time with her little brother. He waved excitedly at her as she walked across the airport from her gate. ” Ates, where I am.” He yelled, smiling from ear to ear. She ran to him, throwing her arms around his neck, ” Duman, you have grown foot since I was here last.” She couldn’t help but stare, he had changed, so tall and handsome. He looked just like their mother, but with dark blonde hair. She hadn’t been home in several months, but didn’t expect to see a whole different person in front of her, this Duman was a man. He felt the stare from her, ” What, why are you looking at me like that.” He asked, nervously running his fingers through his hair. Although he kept his hair in a shorter style, it was just a thick and wonderful looking as her Dads and Deniz’s, his smile was just as electrified as theirs, and his olive skin along with those hazel blue eyes was sure to make any one stop and look,…..he wasn’t her awkward little brother anymore. She smiled, ” No reason, but you just seem so grownup, just wondering how that happened. So what do you want to do today, this whole day is my treat.” She said, proudly taking his arm.
Ates had finished the last year of her studies in Naples, but she didn’t have any plans to return to Istanbul just yet. She would take this time with her family to sort out what she wanted to do with her life. The response from the publishers in London had been more positive after she sent the next set of chapters to them. So it looked like she may have her first book deal. She knew her mother had sent her transcript to Bedir, her old publisher, but when he asked for a meeting with her she postponed it. It felt to much like a courtesy meeting, just something he was doing for her Mom. She felt like her days were ticking by without any direction, and to come back home might just make her stall altogether. She had to make this on her own, she knew her mother would understand, she may not like it, but she would understand. She would stay until after Deniz’s wedding then she would go back to Naples and figure out the rest of her life.
Can and Sanem were happy again, all their children were home, under the same roof. It seemed so far in between times now, with Ates in Italy, but they hoped she would be coming home now that her school was finished. ” Ates, when do you plan on packing up you apartment, we can come and help you, if you want.” Her father asked. She smiled at everyone, ” Well it seems I won’t be coming home right away. In fact I’m flying to London in a few weeks to meet with the publisher there.” So I think it would be best if I stay in Italy, it seems more centrally located.” She delivered, then looked away. Can frowned, ” Are you sure, I thought the London deal wasn’t going well, and what about Bedir, didn’t he contact you.” He added, with an urgency in his voice. Sanem felt that sick feeling in her stomach, but was waiting to say anything until Ates told them her plan. ” No, not at all, the London office really liked the last chapters I sent, so it looks like we might have a deal. And Bedir,….well it just seemed to strange. I don’t want to use Moms name for my gain.” She looked at her Mom, seeing the pain in her eyes, but also the understanding. Everyone sat in silence for a minute, then Can slide his chair back and stood, ” Well, we will discuss this later, so don’t think all the decisions are made yet.” He scoffed.
Sanem followed him to the garden, ” Can, we can’t make her come home, not if she’s determined to be a writer. I’ll talk to her again, and see about setting up a meeting with Bedir. Can knew he was fighting a losing battle when it came to Ates, she was her mothers daughter, full of spirit and hope and if she wanted something bad enough,….she would get it.
The triplets were soon to be 24 years old, each taking on their own lives. He knew his wife was right, but to let go of such a miracle in their lives would be harder than he thought. He thought back on the first years of their lives, how hard it had been. The demand of feedings, diaper changes, and the many hours of sleeplessness, but he would gladly relive it all in a heartbeat. He swallowed down the lump in his throat, and looked at Sanem, ” Did we work so hard taking care of them for this, for them to walk away from us.” It hurts much more than I thought it would. I’m not sure if I can stand it.” She smiled, ” My husband, my life, my everything, I know the pain, I feel it too. We have four amazing kids,..that have flourished into talented and beautiful adults. We can’t hold them on our laps forever, they were born to leave.” She kissed his cheek, ” But I my dear, will never leave, so we will go through this together, and be proud parents of these strong and wonderful people.” He looked into her eyes, how he loved her.
” You’re right,…as always.” How did I get so lucky Mrs. Divit.
” It wasn’t luck my darling,….it was our destiny…..
Chapter 18
With Deniz and Asli’s wedding just a day away, Yilly made an announcement that took everyone by surprise. They were having their last family dinner together before the wedding, when Yilly asked, ” If it’s ok with you Deniz, I would like to invite someone to attend your wedding with me,…..is it.” She asked. Deniz was confused, but smiled, ” Of course, why wouldn’t it be,…is it one of your girlfriends.” He asked, squinting his eyes in a questioning manner. Yilly cleared her throat, ” Actually no,….it isn’t, I don’t think you know him, but his name is Ozan, he is a copywriter at the agency.” She stated, so matter of fact and without hesitation. Can glanced at Sanem, as Sanem glanced at him. Deniz was surprised, but happy, ” Oh,…I see, so will he be coming as your date, or what.” He asked, glancing quickly around the table at everyone. The all seemed to be staring at Yilly with their mouths open. She replied, ” Yes,…my date, I think that’s what you could say,” she stuttered, shifting in her chair, ” He’s a very nice man, I just thought it would be polite to ask him to come along.” He doesn’t have any family here and not many friends, so I thought,………she stopped mid-sentence, hesitated a minute, then stood quickly, ” Look, we have been seeing each other for a while now, just for lunch dates and a few movies after work.” She spurted out, ” I really like him, and I hope you all do as well.”
Sanem stood and reached for her daughter, ” Of course it’s fine, we’re just a little shocked. How long have you been seeing each other.” She asked, with everyone else still staring, speechless. Yilly had always been the serious type, with work the only thing in her life, so to hear that she had been going out with someone, well,….it wasn’t expected. Clearly embarrassed, she pulled away from her mother, ” Look I haven’t said anything before, just because of this very reaction, and the fact he is a co- worker. But we have been close now for about a couple of months. I know it may not be appropriate with our situation, but…….Can interrupted her, ” Yilly, he is a bit older than you, isn’t he. And if I am correct, a divorced man.” He spoke, not looking at her. This was not at all the type of person he would have expected his daughter to become involved with. ” Dad, yes, he is twelve years older than I am, and the divorce was not his fault.” She explained, trying to defuse the situation. ” Yilly, I always have had faith in you to make the right decisions, and the respect in you to except them. But I think this may not be one of those times.” Can stood, looking at her for the first time, ” I will be speaking with Ozan.” He turned and left the room.
So here it was, the first defiant act from his oldest daughter. It seemed that she had let another person come between her and her family. She had to have known how they would react, with just the age difference, let alone the fact of him being a divorced man. Sanem fought the urge to adamantly defend her daughter, giving her husband time to calm down. Yilly looked to Sanem, “Mom, please, can you talk to him,….please.” She patted her hand, ” Give him a minute dear, your father just needs to process what just happened.” She smiled at her, hoping her words would prove to be true. Yilly rushed out, going to her room. Deniz shook his head, ” What just happened, I’m not sure if I understand it yet. So this guy is like 36 years old and been married before.” He asked, looking at his mother. ” Deniz, we’re all not sure right now, but don’t make anymore problems by trying to analyze it.” The other Divit children sat in silence, as they realized their sister, the one, that had for all these years, been the person of stability and strength, was indeed human. She had fallen to the temptation of normalcy, letting her heart, for once over rule her head. Ates got up from the table, ” Mom, should I go talk to her, maybe she will open up more to me.” Her mother agreed. Ates tapped on the door, “Abla, are you ok, can I come in.” She asked, hearing the sobs coming from the side of the door. She couldn’t remember the last time she had heard her sister cry.
Sanem found Can in the garden, although it wasn’t the weather for being outside. She sat down beside him, ” Can, I know you are upset, but if nothing else, you know our daughter. She wouldn’t make any decision without it being something she felt strongly about. She’s still that same person, you just need to see it now.” She spoke softly to him. He closed his eyes, ” Sanem, she is making a mistake, how do you sit back and let her do that.” His heart was crumbling as he spoke, this strong willed girl that had developed into to a self assured woman, was letting her heart make this mistake. Sanem curled up beside this man that filled her heart with love, ” We trust her, she has never given us any reason not to. We trust she sees someone we don’t, or we trust she will see what we see eventually. Either way, this is Yildiz Divit, our daughter, and we will not turn our backs on her.” Her statement was firm and direct, hitting him straight in the heart.
Yilly slowly opened the door, ” Ates, what am I going to do.” She asked her face streaked with tears. ” What if Dad won’t let me see him anymore, or what if he fires him from the agency.” I can’t take it, Ates,…I think I’m in love with him.” She slumped down on the bed, covering her face with her hands, ” What should I do Abla, you have to help me.” Never in there 24 years of existence had her sister ever ask her for help, she was always the one with all the answers. Yet her she was, openly devastated, and unsure of what to do. Ates saw a person she didn’t recognize, but one she knew she loved more than ever. Maybe for the first time, she was proud to be her sister. She put her arms around her, ” Yilly, how could I not help you, you are my only sister, whatever you need I’ll be here for you.” Her own heart breaking for her.
It was late, well into the early morning hour, when Yilly finally came out of her room. She walked to the kitchen for some water, when a voice startled her, ” Yilly, I think we need to talk alone, don’t you.” She turned to see her father sitting on the sofa in the dark. ” Yes, I think we do.” She replied, walking over to sit beside him.. ” Dad, I know I have disappointed you, but if you would give Ozan a chance, you may see the person I see.” She pleaded with her eyes. Can smiled slightly, ” My dearest daughter, if you knew the feeling in my heart right now, you wouldn’t say that. I am not at all disappointed in you, but as a father, you need to see what I see.” He sighed, ” I trust the fact, you think you know this man, and that very well may be, but….for me, I need more than your trust. I will have to know and discover this person for myself.” He took her hand, ” Since the day you were born, we knew you would be the one to be in control, the organizer, the one to know how to live her life. So as your mother has pointed out to me, you are still that person, only now you’re grown.” Let me say this, if you feel this person is the one you can trust and grow with, then do not let me be the one to make you doubt it.
Yilly’s smile was all he needed to make him know he had made the right decision, ” So it’s ok for my to invite him to the wedding.” She asked, her eyes sparkling. At that moment, he knew he had lost his little girl, and had gained a bright and beautiful daughter, one that he had raised to be just that. ” Yes, I think it would be fine…
His heart ached,……as he watched her hurry off to her room, happy and excited…
Yet he was hurting….yearning for the sassy little girl that would forever be in his heart……
Chapter 19
The wedding of Deniz and Asli, had been the turning point for many things in their family. The couple was building their home and their life the way they wanted. Can and Sanem watched them as their house was put together and the beginning of what they planned for the rest of their lives. Ates had agreed to talk to Bedir, with much urging from her mother. ” Ates, just talk to him, then you can decide if he will be right for you. It’s almost like a marriage when you are looking for someone to publish your first book.” She told her. “Bedir isn’t the type of person to take on someone just for a favor.” She offered to accompany her to his office in Milano for her first meeting but Ates declined the offer, as Sanem knew she would. So within a couple of weeks Deniz had started the best part of his life, Ates was well on her way to becoming a famous writer, Yilly had introduced them to a man, much to their surprise, that seemed to be the perfect match for their head strong daughter. Duman was on a path to greatness, in his own quiet secluded way, no longer living in the shadow of his larger than life siblings. Can and Sanem had accomplished the miracle of raising four beautiful and exceptionally talented children.
Along with all this happiness for the Divit family came a tragedy that would rock their very existence. Cans father, Aziz, could no longer battle his ongoing and growing health problems. So 6 months after struggling to attend his first grandsons wedding, the elder Divit took his last breath. The devastation of it all proved to test Cans strength, leaving him to battle with the loss of his biggest supporter. Of course with his mother, Huma, completely absorbed in her own life, she could do nothing more than send a brief message of condolences to him and Emre. Which hurt more than not receiving anything. The two brothers leaned on each other, echoing the words their father had said to them many times before, ” You are my lions, there’s nothing you can’t handle if you stick together.” The loss of the one person that had always been there for them, brought them closer together than ever. Yilly had taken his death extremely hard, he was her mentor and confidante since she was old enough to talk. But he had left her a much bigger gift, the gift of his knowledge and drive, she would indeed head the company one day that he had founded so many years ago. Sanem nursed her husband through the loss of his father with more than love, but also with an undying devotion to her Albatross.
It was months before Can could fully except what had happened, and return as the head of the agency. And return he did, but the demand of this role had lost it luster. The agency had continued to flourish, under the eye of Yildiz and Emre, with the signing of another huge account, the agency was indeed on top. Sanem knew he was going through the motions of everyday life, but the fire had gone out for him and to run the company. Yilly and Ozan were becoming closer, and Sanem couldn’t help but like this man. He kept Yilly in check better than anyone else. Can had come to depend on him to help Yilly, the couple had proven to be that power couple when it came to creativity. After a meeting with a possible new client one afternoon, not long after Can had returned to the agency, Can asked Ozan to come to his office. ” Ozan, sit down and let’s talk.” He motioning to the sofa. Ozan was hesitant, but did as he said. ” That was a very good presentation you just gave, I just wanted you to know that.” Can paused, looking down at the floor. ” I won’t lie to you, I was against your relationship with my daughter from the very beginning, but I also know how stubborn and head strong my daughter is. And you seem to handle her very well.” So with that being said, I am prepared to give you a promotion to Assistant Creative Director.” Ozan was shocked, ” Thank you Mr. Divit, I’m shocked, but I except with much happiness.” He cleared his throat, ” Mr. Divit, I know there is an age difference, but I don’t see Yilly as a 25 year old, she is much more mature than most people I have met.” She is very special to me, and I think she feels the same way about me.” Can smiled, ” Yes she has always been that way, but the fact is she is still just 25, but she is a woman of her own, she knows what her heart wants, so what ever you feel for each other, just know you have our blessing.”
Ates’s meeting with Bedir had been a turning point in her life. He immediately took her under his wing, ” Ates, don’t let anyone tell you that you don’t have talent, because you do.” I see you as one of the most free spirited writers I have ever seen. This will be the book of the year I predict, and you will be the most sought after writer of the decade.” She smiled, ” My mother told me you wouldn’t do anything just for a favor, are you sure you’re not saying just what I want to hear.” Bedir stood, ” Well your mother was right, I can’t base a book on a favor, I have a reputation to uphold, so whatever I put out from this publishing house needs to be top notch writing. If I didn’t believe in you, this would have been a quick coffee and visit session and you would have been on your way. So it’s up to you, if you want to trust me and your talent.” She knew she had found the right person. ” Ok,….that sounded just like my Dad talking, so I guess we have a deal.” Thank you for being so honest with me. She called her mother with the news, ” Mom, I just love him, he reminds me of Dad.” Thank you for making me listen to you. I’ll let you know the release date of the book.” She told her, Sanem feeling the same excitement she had experienced all those years ago.
Duman had caught the eye of one the largest Law firms in Istanbul, and they had offered him a job as a trainee to one of their top lawyers. This would provide him with much more experience than any classroom. After much discussion with Can and Sanem, he cut back his university classes to a minimum and took the position. He was one step closer to his dream, being just as successful as his siblings. His ambition was a close resemblance to his oldest sisters, and had left him little time for a personal life, but the beautiful blonde girl, Yasmin, that was once their neighbor had never strayed to far from his mind. Maybe he would look her up one day, of course when he had made a name for himself…
These children had given Can and Sanem almost everything they had ever wanted..
To see them so happy and successful was always their first priority.
Now, it seemed, was the time for them to be as they once were….to live for each other again…..
Chapter 20
With all that was good in the world, there was always something that seemed to make your life unhappy. Mihriban had taken a turn for the worse with her health, making it impossible for her to live alone. Sanem and Can tried to convince her to move in the house with them, but she adamantly refused. ” My mind is still of good working order, but my body is working against me, so it’s better if I go to live with my sister and my niece in Izmir. They have a huge home there, and it’s just the two of them.” Sanem couldn’t have been any more upset if it had been her own mother that was going away. They tried in vain to get her to stay, even Duman, which was Mihriban’s favorite, begged her to stay and let him move in with her, but she wouldn’t hear if it. A few days before she was to move, she called Can and Sanem to her home. They both had been dreading this conversation, ” My children, you both know I consider you my children don’t you. I love you both, just as much as if you were my own flesh and blood. I have no need for this large farm any more, so I am leaving it to you both. This place has been your home for so many years and it has nursed you both through the hardest times in your lives, so I know you will cherish and love it just as I have over the years.” Here is the paperwork, all we need is your signature, and it is yours.” Sanem’s heart was breaking, she had come here for healing almost thirty years earlier, this woman and this place had done just that in their own special way.
Of course there were some stipulations with this gift, ” I think that Yilly should move here to this home. She needs to be on her own now, and this is not to far away, yet just far enough for her freedom. She’s 27 years old and needs her own space.” I ask you to please keep this all in our family, and when you both see fit, pass it on to the children.” The news of her wishes met with much enthusiasm from Yilly, who had been eager to move out in her own. ” Oh grandmother, I will take good care of it, an always treat it as your home.” She hugged the woman that she had loved as much as her biological grandma, ” You can be sure of that.” The bond between this family was made through unconditional love, not my blood, making it even stronger, so all was agreed and Mihriban said her goodbyes to each of them privately before leaving. Ates had flown home to say goodbye to her grandma as well, vowing to visit her as often as possible. Mihriban’s life had been changed with the reading of Sanem Aydins book all those years ago, and the friendship that developed because of it, and in her heart she knew, this was the way this story was to end.
Ates’s book had been published and the world accepted her as the wonderful writer she was. Her popularity was known across the country, and her first book was on its way to a #1 bestseller. It seemed so surreal, this was the same path her mother had traveled, but with a heart full of love that guided her, but Ates had stayed clear of any kind of relationship for fear of heartbreak. She knew her mother and fathers story by heart, she had read her Moms books a million times over her lifetime, and the anguish they both had lived was more than she could take sometimes. Although their story played out like a fairytale, Ates was not willing to take that risk in her own life. She had many boyfriends, but had never told her parents about any of them, it seemed if she did, the relationship would have touched her heart, and that would have left it open for hurt. She only loved her writing, her family and herself, for now that was enough for her. Her destiny, her fate hadn’t been decided yet, but if she was to meet her’s, she prayed she would have the courage to know it.
Deniz and Asli had made a beautiful home, not far from the farm. Their lives were full and rich with love, with them both focused on happiness. His job had proven to be more than he expected, with him promoted to a partner in the firm at the age of 26, and he had been fulfilling that role for a year now. It seemed his future could be whatever he wanted it to be. Can was proud to say his son had traveled the path he wanted, much like he had done, but had never ran away from what he felt. Can regretted all of his failings, all the time wasted on running, but he knew things happen for a reason. His son was so much like his mother, always the optimist, always looking for the best in everyone, never wanting to see the bad side of anything. He took on his father’s determination and drive to go for what he wanted, probably the best trait to inherit. Without it, he might never had been noticed as the person he is now. Deniz and Asli were eager to start a family, and now with a partnership in the firm, it seemed like a perfect time.
Their youngest son had also taken on his biggest dream. Between the internship and school, his life was more than full. He was weeks away from taking the bar exam, and there wasn’t anyone that didn’t know he would pass it with flying colors, least of all his parents. The firm he had been working for the past 2 years, had already y made him an offer of a permanent job there, with his own clients and personnel, but he was slow to except. He knew the best corporate lawyer in all of Istanbul was his fathers old friend Metin, and the thought of working with him had always been his dream. He knew his Dad and Metin had parted ways many years back, but had still remained in contact. He hadn’t told his Dad he had been in contact with Metin, for a position in his office, but he had talked to his mother about it. Sanem was overjoyed he would consider working with Metin. The divide between Can and Metin, that was once his best friend, had been an unfortunate incident, brought on my Aylin, but Can had been stubborn and refused to listen to Metin. So over the years the split between the two began to fuse back together, and the occasional phone call about business had become more excepted. If by some slim chance, Can’s son could repair the severed ties that had once been Can’s lifeline, then Sanem knew her husband would be the better for it.
After Mihriban left, leaving them all that had been important to her in her life, Sanem felt the need to write a continuation of her life after the children. She wanted to leave a documentation of how and what had brought them to this point. ” Can, I think I want to publish another book, what do you think.” She held his hand as they sat together in the garden. Their lives had come full circle, with Yilly living in Mihriban’s old house, and Duman taking the guest house as his own., the couple found themselves alone again. ” What,….are you sure. That’s a lot of work.” She smiled, ” No, not really, I have all the notebooks from over the years, and all I need to do is write about us, right now.” I can piece it all together, and just add in the continuation of our life after the children, and maybe the addition of some grandchildren for us.”
Can looked into her eyes,…those eyes that still set him on fire
” Grandchildren, huh,…..you could possibly be the most desirable grandmother I know…
She felt the goosebumps, ” Yes, and you could be the most handsome grandfather I know……
Chapter 21
It’s funny how things have a way of coming full circle, in this amazing circle of life. The choices that one makes for love over the course of a lifetime can be the very thing that they most regret.
The publishing of Ates Divit’s book had been a major event in the young woman’s life, but nothing could prepare her for the out pouring of love she received from her fans. The first booking signing after the release in the Uk, had turned out to be the largest for the most prestigious book store in London. The popularity of the book and of Ates herself, had reached almost a rock star status by the time her book had been released in the UK. Bedir had found another writer phenomenon, with her book set to make it debut in America within the next few months. Ates had a busy schedule once she had reached London, and barely had time to think. Sanem had so wanted to join her there, but the timing hadn’t been right. ” Ates I’m so sorry, but we won’t be able to attend the signing, we are preparing for the 75th anniversary of Fikri Harika. It really doesn’t seem possible, I don’t know where the time has gone.” Her mother regretted having to miss this very important event in her daughters life.
Ates looked out over the sea of people as she was getting ready to enter the room. She had never expected such a large crowd. ” Ms.Divit, this is the largest turn out for a signing we have ever had, in fact we have had to turn people away.” The owner of the book store fidgeted nervously as he waited to announce her. Ates patted the older gentleman’s hand, ” I’m sure it will be fine, it will probably go quickly.” She felt her heart beat a little faster, as they called her name and she entered the room. Her welcome was overwhelming, and brought her to tears, but everyone was so nice and excepting of her, they almost seemed like a crowd of old friends. After what seemed like hours, the line had finally reached an end. Ates was tired and glad to see there was only a couple of people left in the line, as she reached for the book from the next person. “Hello ma’am, and your name,” she asked, ready to personalize her copy of the book. ” You do look just like your mother, and I see you have inherited her talent as well.” Ates looked up quickly to see if she recognized the woman. ” Excuse me, do you know my mother.” Ates smiled at her, thinking how ironic. ” Well actually, I am an old friend of your fathers,…..Polen Ersoy.” She extended her hand to Ates.
Ates felt the blood drain from her head, and her heart beat hard. The woman was tall, slender, her hair that was streaked with grey, was pulled up tightly in a bun. Ates immediately got the feeling of being inferior. ” I see, the name rings a bell.” Ates looked directly into her eyes, ” But I don’t recall you being a friend.” She continued the stare, not willing to break the look of denial from her. Polen smiled, “I understand, I’m sure my name hasn’t been a topic in your home very often. But there are things that you don’t know.” The woman reached across the table to touch her hand. ” I would like to talk to you in private, if I may. This place is a bit to busy.” Ates jerked her hand away, ” And why would you want to speak to me in private. There’s really nothing you could say that I want to hear.” Her face feeling hot from anger. Polen straightened, ” I think you might, if you would just hear me out.” Just for 5 minutes.” She pleaded. For a second Ates thought of dismissing her like an annoying fan, having the security guard escort her away, but the then curiosity got the best of her. What could this woman, that had caused her mother so much heartache, possibly want to tell her. She turned to the owner of the book store, “Is there a room that I might borrow for a moment to have a private discussion with this woman.” Ates felt the fear and anger that her mother must have felt for this woman wash over her like a tidal wave, her instinct to protect her mother came to the surface.
The owner lead them to a room off the the main lobby, ” Is this room ok. He asked, seeing the tension build between the couple. ” Yes, and we won’t be long, so please have my assistant pack things up.” Ates felt the need to let her know she was in control. ” Ms.Ersoy, you have 2 minutes, so I suggest you say what you have to say quickly.” Polen lowered her head, ” I can imagine what you must think of me, but let me explain my side of the story.” Ates interrupted, ” Your couldn’t be more wrong, there’s no way you could know what I think of you. I don’t need to know your side of the story, because I know my parents’ side of the story, and that’s the only side that matters.” She turned to leave, ” But Ms. Divit, I want you all to know what happened, and how sorry I am.” She reached out to Ates with an envelope in her hand. ” This will explain everything to your Mother and your Dad, if you would give it to them, please.” Her eyes had filled with tears, Ates stared at the envelope, ” So this is the explanation of why, and how you tried to destroy my mothers life. That’s not possible…..there isn’t an explanation. Polen shoved the envelope into Ates’ hand, ” Take it please, give it to your mother.” She turned quickly and hurried out of the room. Her first thought was to rip it up and throw in the trash, but instead, she stuck it in her pocket.
By the time she arrived to her hotel room, she had already called Bedir, “I must go home before I can go to the next signing, can you make the arrangements. Bedir did so immediately, without asking any questions. She was able to get a flight out that night, but it was a late one. Making her arrive in Istanbul before sunrise, she took a cab home, not wanting to tell anyone she was there. The thought of telling her Mom who she had met, made her nervous to say the least, but she knew it had to be done. She let herself in with her key, and went to the kitchen to make tea. It was still early and she wasn’t sure if her parents were awake or not, so she waited. Sanem heard the noise from the kitchen but thought it was Duman, scavenging the fridge for food, as she made her way to the kitchen, ” Son, you must get food for…..she stopped mid-sentence…….Ates, my dear, what are you doing here. She threw her arms around her neck, ” I’m so glad to see you, how was the signing.” Sanem squealed, hugging her tightly. Can came in, hearing the commotion from down the hall, ” Ates, why are you here, did you come for the anniversary party.” He scooped up his daughter in his arms, ” It doesn’t matter why you came, we’re just happy you’re here.”
After all was settled down, they took their tea to the garden, where her Dad built a fire in the fire pit to chase off the nip in the air. Sanem knew there was something she wanted to say, but it wasn’t something easy. ” Ates, it’s written all over your face, something is wrong, so just tell us.” Ates sighed, ” Mom, Dad, I met someone in London. Someone you both know.” She reached in her pocket and pulled out the envelope, ” Polen Ersoy,….she came to my signing and brought this letter for you.” Sanem felt that same feeling from over 30 years ago rush up through her body. ” What did she tell you, Ates, how unworthy I am of your father. Well that’s old news, and frankly, I’m quite tired of hearing it.” Can took the envelope, ” A letter, for what. Did she say why.” Ates shook her head, ” Nothing more than, this letter would explain everything that happened and why.” And she wanted you to read it Mom.” Sanem took the letter, letting all the memories of that time in their lives play through her mind.
After a few minutes, Sanem realized that Polen didn’t have the same effect on her anymore, her life hadn’t fallen apart at the mention of her name. She stared at the letter.
” I really don’t need an explanation or a reason, from her……
She placed the letter in the fire pit, unopened…..
” My life is what is was destined to be………….And there’s nothing she could say to change that.
Sanem had moved on, she had unshackled herself from that feeling of dominance that Polen had once held over her. She didn’t need to know why, she just needed to know she had won!!
Chapter 22
What a release of feelings the burning of that letter had been. She was finally in control of her life. Sanem would never know of all the deceit and cunningness that Huma and Polen had contrived to destroy her. Her mother-in-law and Polen had never accepted her as Cans wife, but over the years and four children later, their acceptance just simply wasn’t needed. So when the news came of Huma’s illness, Can and Sanem sent a card of best wishes, and a speedy recovery, but let Emre shoulder the responsibility of going to be by her side. When the news came of her death sometime later, both Can and Sanem flew or Switzerland to be by his brothers side and help him cope. Although Can was definitely sad for what had happened, that chapter of Can’s life was finally closed…….
Two years later…
Metin stuck out his hand, ” Hello, you have to be Duman Divit,” he grabbed his hand and gave it a vigorous shake. ” Come in and have a seat.” Duman looked around the office, a stylish yet manly decorated room. Full of books and school memorabilia, with a few pictures of his family. He sat down across the desk from this man that he had heard about all of his life, but had never seen. The separation of his father and this man had always been a closed subject while they were growing up, so their friendship was always spoke about when they were in school and nothing more than that. With just the occasional business calls and meetings that always seemed to leave his Dad in a melancholy way, Metin Avukat was quite the mystery.
” Yes, I’m very happy to finally meet you.” Duman nodded, anxious to learn all about him. Metin leaned back in his chair, ” So you are the youngest, and you’re 24 years old. So that makes the triplets getting close to thirty,…right.” Metin had always kept up with Can and his family, even when Can didn’t know it. ” Yes sir, that’s right, and I’ve been working at my current office for almost 4 years now.” Metin raised his eyebrows, ” So they took you right from the university then, that’s very impressive.” Duman smiled, he felt like he had been given the biggest compliment of his life. The opportunity to work with Metin had been something he had wanted for a while now. He had the reputation as one of the best corporate lawyers in Istanbul. When he heard that his assistant had left his firm he immediately turned in a resume.
Metin hadn’t really thought seriously about filling the position right away, when his assistant had to leave for personal reasons, but at his age, he knew it wouldn’t get any easier to keep up the pace of his office. ” How did you hear of the opening here anyway, I hadn’t made it public.” Duman straightened, ” Well, one the junior partners at the firm, was acquainted with your assistants brother, and he told me about, since he knew I was very interested in working here. Metin leaned across his desk, ” Does your father know you have applied for a position at my firm, I just want to be aware of what may happen.” He looked seriously at Duman. The young man knew there had been a difference of opinion between the two friends concerning a business deal. That had lead to the dismissal of Metin as the lawyer for the agency, but that was many years ago, and he hoped that it wouldn’t put a hold on his wanting to work there. ” No sir he doesn’t, but my mother does, and was very happy about it.” Duman replied, with distinction. In an instant, Metin’s demeanor changed, ” Ah,…Sanem, how is your mother, I haven’t talked to her in probably 2 years now. I hope she is well.” Duman nodded, ” She is, very well in fact. She works with Dad and Yilly at the agency part time, and has almost finished with her third book.” She was very happy at the possibility of me working in your firm.”
Duman sat there for a minute, watching Metin, as he gazed off in space, seemingly reliving a piece of the past. Then he turned to Duman, ” And why have you not told your Dad you were coming here. Do you think he wouldn’t approve of you working for me.” He shifted nervously in his chair, ” I’m not sure sir, so I elected not to tell him until after our first meeting.” Metin reached into the top drawer of his desk and pulled out a folder with employment papers inside, ” Read over this packet, and when you have told you father and he has approved of you working here, then sign the last page and return it to me.” Duman stared at him blankly, ” But do you not want to see my employment history, or any experience I might have. Metin smiled, ” Son, I already know all of that, I have followed you since the University recruited you from high school. I want you to know, you didn’t get this position because of your Dad, you got this position because I know you will be damn good as this job.” Duman stood, ” Thank you Mr. Avukar, I will be back tomorrow, if that’s alright, and thank you for the opportunity.” Metin smiled as the young man started out, ” Oh, Mr. Divit, please tell, your mother I said hello.” And good luck.”
Duman hardly remembered walking to his car he was so happy, but suddenly there he was. He got in and opened up the folder, he briefly scanned over the papers. The firm had excellent benefits but the salary wasn’t disclosed in the packet, so what if Dad asks me how much I will be getting payed, I’ll have to say I don’t know, then he’s going to give me a lecture on being thorough. He was starting to doubt himself, but he couldn’t back out now. He practiced how he was going to tell his Dad, all the way home, but once he opened the door and saw his Dad standing there, all the formalities went out the window. ” Hey son, how are you. We’re fixing dinner if you would like to stay.” Can motioned for him to sit, ” Something wrong, you look a little pale.” Duman glances at his mother, she smiled, ” Well, Duman….how did it go.” Sanem had known he was going for an interview at Metin’s law firm, but she had learned her lesson many years ago, and had vowed never to keep anything from Can, so he also knew that his youngest son had applied at Metin firm. Duman took a seat, and took a deep breath, ” Dad, I had an interview today, and please, don’t get upset, but I had sent a resume to Metin Avukar’s firm, and I met with him today.” Can turned to face him, ” And how is Metin, is he well.” Can questioned his son. ” Yes he’s well, but Dad I got the job as his assistant junior lawyer,…..that is, if you approve.” Can threw up his hands, ” Of course you did, he couldn’t ask for a better assistant.” Sanem laughed, ” Duman, your Dad already knew about it.” Can grabbed his son, hugging him, ” Yes, I did, and I couldn’t be happier. You have chosen the best person to work for, he will teach you a lot.” Duman felt like a weight had been lifted, “Are you sure it’s ok with you, I mean, I wouldn’t if you weren’t comfortable with it.”
Can looked at Sanem, ” No Duman, I’m fine with it, your mother has shown me it’s better to forgive than to hold on to a grudge, especially one that was unnecessary in the first place.”
She smiled at her husband, thinking back on that day, and how much he had changed over the years.
” So you better sign those papers Duman.” And I will call Metin tomorrow and tell him what a fine lawyer he just hired”……….
That was the start of a reunion, and the combination of two lawyers, that over the next few years would prove to be the most successful in Istanbul. Metin taught Duman everything he knew, grooming him to take over the firm, and Duman accepted it all, making Duman Divit the most sought after corporate attorney. Can and Metin restarted their friendship right where it left off, but with both of them older and wiser and with a lot less expectations.
Chapter 23
Over the last two years Yilly had taken on some the largest companies in Turkey, and made a number of successful campaigns. Can had turned more and more of the control of the company over to her, which was just what she wanted, and with her relationship with Ozan taking a turn for the worse, and their parting of ways, she buried herself in her work to kill the pain. Yildiz Divit was as much her father as anyone, and all of his values had been included in her personality. She was a cut and dried person, leaving little room for being human. Sanem tried to talk to her about forgiveness, and acceptance of ones failings, but as far as she was concerned, deceit was deceit and there was no turning back from it. So that left her alone again, and with nothing but her work, vowing to never let herself depend on another person.
With the triplets set to turn 30 years old soon, they all seemed to be firmly planted in their ways and following the dreams they all had. Yilly could have moved away from the farm, moved into a expensive apartment in the city, but she chose to stay in her grandparents home. She needed that place as much as Sanem had needed it when she was in her darkest days without Can. It brought Yilly the only peace she knew. Her life had always been as the one that had to take care of everyone else, her sister and brothers, her grandfather, and now the agency. This was her meaning in life, and she would meet it with responsibility.
A few days before their birthday, the agency got a call from one of the children charities in town, asking for a meeting. They were in need of a city wide campaign that would draw attention their needs of the children. Deren had taken the call, and immediately wanted to help them. With her an orphan herself, the thought of helping other children in that situation, struck a chord with her. She tapped on Yilly’s office door, ” Yildiz, I just had a call from a Ali Ozdemir, he is in charge of the Children’s Charities here in Istanbul, I think he was just appointed that position. He wants a meeting with us for a campaign. What do you think.” Yilly thought for a minute, ” I think charities mean no money for the agency, so it probably won’t work for us.” She turned back to her work, ” But this would be a great humanitarian task to take on, you know, something good for our image. At least lets speak with Can about it.” Deren replied, hoping she would see the possibility. Yilly sighed, ” Ok, if you feel it would benefit us, then by all means, talk to Dad about it. Can and Sanem both thought the same as Deren, the agency had the best opportunity to help a very needy organization, and they all wanted to be involved.
The meeting was set for mid-morning, but Yilly was still not fully on board with the whole campaign. ” I’m going to stand back and listen on this one Dad, I’m not sold on the idea, but you and Deren think it will be good for the company, so I’ll let her go with it.” Yilly was expecting a whole group of supporters of the charity to arrive for the meeting, so when one man came alone, it got her attention. ” Hello, I’m Ali Ozdemir, and you are Ms. Deren.” He extended his hand to her, as she met him at the front desk. She smiled, ” Yes, come into our conference room.” She led him to their meeting room where Can and Sanem along with Yilly and a couple of the writers were waiting for them. Can stood shaking his hand, ” You came alone.” He asked, looking around for the rest of the entourage. ” Yes sir, just me and my folder. There’s not a lot of people involved in this issue, that’s why I’m here, to open everyone’s eyes to the problem of these unwanted children.”
His folder was full of tragedies and heartbreaking stories, that had everyone sympathies, especially Deren. Can and Sanem were excited to help, and offered their services to bring more awareness to the problem of these children. Yilly listened intently, not being able to take her eyes off of this man who was visibly, very emotional about this subject. After he had presented their problem to them, he asked for their best ideas on how to bring these issues to the public. All eyes turned to Yildiz, ” Ms. Yildiz, do you have any immediate ideas on how to address this campaign,” her Dad looked at her directly. She smiled slightly, ” If Mr. Ozdemir could give us a couple of days to work on it, I’m sure we can come up with a presentation that will best suit the problem.” Her eyes still unable to look away. He nodded in approval and stood to leave, ” So will be you be heading this campaign Ms.Yildiz, if so, I would like to invite you to our facility, for a more in-depth view. His eyes were full of determination, as he looked at her, ” I would be happy to give you a tour of our home.” She nodded and shook his hand, their eyes locked for a moment. ” I would love to, just tell me when.” She felt her face flush with excitement.
Deren was gushing on and on about him after he left the meeting, ” What a dedicated man, you can tell he loves those children.” Yilly, would you really go there, I mean I’m sure it would be an eye opener.” But if you don’t want to, then I would love to go.” The words hit her with force, ” No,…that’s fine, I think I might like to see it first hand.” She looked around as everyone stared at her. She quickly left and walked to her office, her mind still on that feeling she got from that look in his eyes. She shook her head, “What are you doing Yildiz Divit, there’s no room in your head for another man.” But her hand still tingled from their touch, and the thought of seeing him again made her heart beat fast. She turned her mind back to her work, ” If he calls, I’ll go have a look at the children’s home, there’s nothing wrong with that”……
Her parents had never seen her blush before, so her Dad was quite shocked as they walked back to the office. “Sanem, did you notice Yilly, she was actually blushing when Mr. Ozdemir shook her hand.” Her mother raised her eyebrows, ” Well he was a very handsome man, and from what I understand, he’s single as well.” She wanted her daughter to find someone she could share her life with, but to do that, she needed to open herself up to people, and if a children’s charity was going to do that, then so be it. Within an hour Yilly had a call from Mr. Ozdemir, ” Ms. Divit, if you are free, I would love to give you a tour of our facility tomorrow, and maybe you could stay for lunch.” She cleared her throat, ” Well, I’ll need to check my schedule, but if I can, I will be there at 11:00, Is that acceptable for you.”
So just as quickly as that, your life can change. All it takes is opportunity and your destiny can walk into your life…….This was the beginning of Yildiz and Ali’s fairytale romance, much like the one her parents had lived……..
Chapter 24
It seemed everyone in Istanbul knew of the Divit children. They were each admired for what they were accomplishing. Deniz was by far the most recognized building engineer and the demand on his talents kept him busy. Him and his wife had hoped to have a start on that big family they both wanted, but the timing just hadn’t been right. Asli took her work very seriously, being a counselor for students in primary school had opened her eyes to all the problems that a child can have from a dysfunctional family. They both wanted to have a host of children, and provide them with a happy and loving home, so they were just waiting for the magic to happen. The couple was sure it would happen at any moment, and they would be able to announce a new member to the Divit family.
He made sure he spoke to Ates on a weekly basis, with her being so far away, he always wanted to keep her up to date on what was going g on. She was more than excited for her brother and his wife when he told her they were seriously trying to have a baby. But they had no idea it would take so long. She knew it would happen for them, and when it did she knew they would be the perfect parents. Her book had taken her all over the world. After the London launch and signing, she was asked to come to nearly every country in Eastern Europe. She talked to her mother about how she had handled being away from home for so long at a time, ” That was by far the hardest part of being a writer, the loneliness. Even if I was surrounded by people, all the fans of my books, the feeling of being alone was much like being lost in an unknown place.” Ates was experiencing that very feeling after having her third book signing in Denmark. The thought of the thousand of miles she was away from any home she knew, made her unable to cope. She had been traveling for weeks, and hadn’t been home to Istanbul in almost a year. After the Denmark signing, she was scheduled for Stockholm, Sweden. When they arrived in Stockholm, she was visibly on edge, so her assistant immediately called Bedir, ” Mr. Bedir, I’m not sure what is going on with Ates, but she is refusing to attend her first meeting, and she is curled up in bed.” Bedir knew all the signs of homesickness, she was definitely her mothers child.
Ates had been in bed for hours, refusing to get dressed or eat anything. All she could think of was her Mom and wondered how she had endured these feelings. The ring of her phone made her jump, she could see it was Bedir, ” Hello Bedir, I guess Kadir called you, I’m sorry but my body just won’t obey this schedule. I really need to go home for a few days.” Her voice sounded tired and drained. ” Ates, I know you are tired and these tours can be hard, so let’s do this two day event and I will see about getting you home for a few days before go to Athens.” She sat up in bed, ” Are you sure, I don’t want to go to Naples, I need to got to Istanbul, I need to see my family.” He assured her he would make it happen, if she would just through the next two days. She made a quick call to her mother, ” Momma, I don’t know how you did it, I’m so ready to come home.” Sanem closed her eyes, remembering the times she had felt the same way, ” I know Ates, but this is part of being a writer, you have to find a way to cope with it.” She listened to her mother’s advice with a heavy heart, ” I know, and I will, but after this signing, I’m coming home for a couple of days before Athens.” I miss you all so much.”
Just like the triplets, this last year had been a year of discovery for Duman. The job with Metin had developed into more than a job, it was as if he had found himself. Metin was quickly becoming his mentor, and he was willing to learn everything he could from him. The pair had a special bond, Metin was grooming him to take over his firm on his retiring. His young man had so many of his fathers traits that it soothed Metin to know he would be leaving his company in the capable hands of Can’s son. His relationship Can, would probably never be the same as it was in school, but it was back to a place that they both wanted. Metin had married years after he left the agency, and they had one child, a boy. Try as he may, he wasn’t able to instill the same values in his son, that he had in himself. So his son had chosen not to follow in his father footsteps. So Duman was filling the void they had felt with his own son.
Duman had just turned 26 years old, and felt like the world was at his feet, with the exception of the love of his life. Over the years, after Yasmin’s family had moved away, they had tried to keep in contact, but the last year had been so hectic, he lost track of her. Their wasn’t a day that went by that he didn’t think about her, that tall slender girl, with eyes as blue as the ocean,….he missed her. He had the charm of his father, and the looks of his mother, so the need for attention from the women was never his problem, but none of them could erase the vision of that girl from his mind. He took on as much work as Metin was willing to give him, just to fill his time, and the occasional business trip out of town was always welcomed. One of their largest accounts had expanded their company to Ismit, not far from Istanbul, and Metin needed Duman to make sure the legal aspects where in order, so he would be gone for a few days. This was the part of the work he enjoyed the most, just that little getaway that let him be on his own for a while.
” Duman, you know that Ates is coming home in a few days, I would hate for you to miss her.” Sanem reminded him. ” I will try to be back before she leaves, this shouldn’t take but a day or two.” He told her. He did miss his sister, and their talks, but work was work, and if he needed to go, then he would go. ” If I miss her, maybe I can meet up with her at Athens.” But don’t worry Mom, I’ll try to be back.” He grabbed his bag and took of for the airport. The flight was short, he arrived well before the meeting time, so after checking in to his hotel, he decided to grab a bite to eat. He walked down the street to a small cafe that had been recommended by the hotel staff, for a quick lunch. The weather always seemed to have a mind of its own, a small downpour had him running for the awning that was over the door to the cafe, along with a few other people. He was rushing to get undercover when a lady, doing the same, crashed into him. Her bag, her books and her shopping bag of groceries, exploded everywhere on the sidewalk. Duman quickly shoved her under the covering, as he tried to rescue her belongings that were strewn around on the sidewalk, ” I’m so sorry ma’am, it was totally my fault.” He was busy gathering her books to keep them from being soaked from the rain, when he heard a voice that stopped him instantly. ” Duman,…Duman Divit is that you.” He knew the voice, but he had never been so afraid to look at someone in his life. The thoughts that ran through his head were from years before, and that vision in his head, of that girl next door all happened in a millisecond. ” Duman, I can’t believe it.” His head could not have prepared him for the sight of her, she looked the same, her hair that honey blonde, but a little shorter, those eyes that were still her color of the clearest part of the sea. It took a minute for him to speak, ” Yasmin,….it’s….I’m……how are you. I’m glad to see you.” His mind going in circles, and his words sounding like he had forgotten the Turkish language.
Destiny……Fate…… it always happen when you least expect it…..
But when you most need it….
Chapter 25
Duman was surprised…..no, he was completely overwhelmed at the fact of literally running into the woman he had been thinking of for the past 5 years. That definition of being dumbfounded was exactly what he was feeling at that time. She was beautiful and her smile had brighten his day even though it was still pouring down rain. With all this running through head in an instant, he finally ask if she would like to have a coffee and catch up on each other. ” Oh, I would love to, but I’m already late for my next appointment,…but I would love to get together later.” Her eyes sparkling, as she looked at him. He felt that old feeling of rejection, but brushed it aside and smiled, ” That sounds great, I have a meeting this afternoon, but what about dinner, that is if you don’t have plans.” His heart beating so hard, he just knew she would be able to see it. She nodded, and much to his surprise, she accepted, ” I would love it, what time.” Anytime after 5:00 is good for me.” He smiled, ” Ok, then 6:00, but where, I’m not familiar with the town.” She smiled, ” Let’s meet here, this is a great place to eat….ok. Here at 6:00, see you then.” She hurried off down the street, glancing back once to look at him, waving as she turned the corner.
He had almost forgotten where he was or how to get back to the hotel, as her image lingered there in his head. A thousand thing were going on in his mind, “was she single, did she live close by, what kind of appointment was she hurrying off to,” how was he going to be able to wait until the evening to see her again. By the time he made it to his clients office, he had worked himself up into a frenzy just imagining the what if’s. The meeting lasted longer than he expected, ending in barely enough time for him to get a shower and change before meeting her. She arrived 15 minutes early, her nerves definitely on edge, the thought of seeing him again had made her the happiest she had been in a while. The last couple of years had been hard for her, with her parents divorce and a failed relationship for her, she was ready for a new beginning. She watched out the front window, as he walked down the street towards the cafe, ” I didn’t know how much I missed him until now, she thought, seeing a man now, where there once was just a boy. But a boy she had never forgotten about.
Ates took a taxi from the airport, she wanted to surprise her parents at the agency. As she walked down the long hall towards her Dads office the first person she saw was her uncle CeyCey, ” Ates your home, come here,……and why didn’t you tell me you were coming.” He hugged her, feeling like he was hugging his own daughter. She smiled, ” It’s a surprise, are you. She loved this man as much, or more, than any blood relative she had. He had been in her life since day one, and had been almost as important to her as her Dad. ” Yes I’m surprised, did your parents know you where coming.” She nodded, ” They knew, they just didn’t what time.” Are they here.” She looked around the office that was just as familiar to her as her own home. ” Ates, you’re here, why didn’t you call.” Her Dad came from his office, with his long arms open wide, ready to engulf his daughter in a hug. ” Daddy, I missed you so much” she met him in the hallway, falling into his welcoming arms. The tears came without warning, as she felt the warmth from him, making her feel like she had just been saved from a near tragedy. Can kissed her on the forehead, ” Come in, CeyCey bring us some tea,….your mother went home early to get your room ready.” He hugged her again, and lightly brushed the tears from her cheek. ” Now, what has my little girl so upset.”
Sanem had gone home to take care of Ates’ old room, there needed to be clean sheets put on the bed and a good dusting of the whole room, since she hadn’t been home in so long. She already had the menu for dinner, it was all of her daughter’s favorite dishes. The grabbed her phone and rang Yilly, ” Yilly don’t forget your sister is coming in today, so you will be here for dinner, and yes,….you may bring Ali with you. Next she called Deniz, ” Don’t forget Ates will be her sometime today, so you and Asli will come to dinner, ok.” She had hoped that Duman would have made it back from Izmir in time to join them, but the text he sent her the night before had told her he wouldn’t be able to be there when Ates got home, but he would try to be home before she left. It seemed to be harder and harder to get all her children together at the same time anymore, it she was thankful for the time they did have.
There seemed to be something different about Yilly, but Ates couldn’t quite put her finger on it. As they all sat down for dinner, she noticed that Yilly didn’t dominate the conversation with her ideas of what everyone should be doing, but she was sharing all the attributes of her new boyfriend. The sisters had always had a close but, guarded relationship, with Yilly always thinking she knew what was best for Ates. But this person seemed to actually be happy about the decisions Ates had made, the decision not to return to Istanbul had at one time been a sore subject for them , but now, Yilly couldn’t have been more happy for her sister. ” Mom, what’s wrong with Yilly,” she asked, following her mother into the kitchen to help her with the coffee. ” She’s not attacking me for every decision I’ve made, is she sick.” Sanem smiled, ” Ates,…..her mother gave her a warning look and shook her head, ” She’s not sick….it’s the man sitting next to her.” She has been a much calmer person since she met Ali, I think she’s seeing a lot of things in a different light now.” ” So a person can change,” she thought, peering back through the door at her sister, ” And I kinda like this person.”
Deniz and Asli had been on pins and needles all evening, dying to deliver their news. The timing needed to be just right for them to make their big announcement. After they brought the coffee and they were all settled in the living room, Deniz stood, clearing his throat, ” Well I hate that what I have to say may overshadow the visit of Ates, but we couldn’t have picked a better time to make this announcement,” it has finally happened, Asli and I are going to be parents.” The shock, the joy, the absolute exuberance of the news set in with the family. With a hundred questions being asked, this was for sure the happiest time for the Divit family.
The next step had arrived,…..these children had surpassed all that had been expected of them.
Can and Sanem Divit, this couple that had defied everyone and everything to live this life of love, would see their family grow and flourish, carrying on the Divit name.
Chapter 26
The news of the new addition to the Divit family had met with much joy, and Ates was so glad she had come home just in time to hear it. Once again, that overwhelming need to come home had found it’s reason, it was to hear this news first hand. When Duman arrived home the next day, thinking he would have the news of the year to tell the family, he was met with the much bigger news. The surprise meeting of Yasmin in Izmit and the fact they she had been just as excited to find him as he was to find her, had made a big change in Duman’s life. Their meeting and dinner had lasted well into the night, with each of them feeling like they had never been separated. She told him about her parents divorce, and her Dad moving to Bursa for his work, leaving her mother there alone to deal with a broken heart. She also revealed about her failed relationship that she had invested 2 years of her life, just to realize she really didn’t have the same feelings for him that he had for her. A hard lesson to learn, that filling a void with just anyone, is not really filling that void.
Finding Yasmin, had indeed been the turning point in Duman life. Everything that had been ordinary in his life, had all of a sudden, seemed to be the most important. He was sure it had all happened for a reason, and he wouldn’t be letting go of her again. So for the next weeks to come, he spent every day off in Izmit, trying to convince her to come back to Istanbul.
Ates had a very successful book signing in Athens. The few days she spent at home with her family had recharged her, giving her that desire to continue on with her passion. The next stop on her book tour, would be taking her all the way to Australia for a two day event. This was the farthest she would have ever been away from home, but the words that her Mom had told her stuck in her head, ” We are never far away if you keep us in your heart.” So the trip to Australia had turned out to be the most exciting two days of her life. Bedir always had a person setup to escort and oversee her visits, wherever she travelled, and Sydney, Australia had been no exception. When she arrived there, she felt so out of place. This country was so different from Turkey, and she was always terrified of the language barrier, but as she exited the plane, she saw a tall, extremely handsome man, holding a sign with her name on it. No, she thought, he can’t be my assistant here. The thought of it made her head spin, and that feeling of a thousand butterflies took flight inside her.
As she walked towards him, he smiled at her, a smile that she couldn’t explain, even with the gift of being a writer. She returned the smile, and much to her surprise, he spoke to her in her native tongue. ” Ms. Divit, my name is Oliver Anderson, and I will be taking care of you while you are here in Sydney.” She stared at him blankly, just for a second, then smiled, ” You speak Turkish, how wonderful.” He nodded, completely taken back by the beauty of her, ” Yes,… thankfully. I believe that’s the reason I received this assignment.” His eyes not being able to look away from her. He reached for her bag, ” I’m a huge fan by the way, maybe I could get your autograph in my book.” Smiling at her as her ushered her toward the door. All of a sudden being away from home wasn’t a big deal anymore, she was more than happy to be where she was. They seemed to be like old friends, as they talked nonstop on there way to the hotel. In a car ride across town, she had learned more about a person than she ever had, and she had revealed almost her entire life history to him. They were completely at ease with one another, and eager to learn more, which they did, spending as much time together as possible over the next few days.
This would turn out to be the life changing event in Ates Divit’s life……the time and place where she would find her destiny……
The phone call came from Bedir on the last day there in Sydney, ” Ates, I have some wonderful news for you, there was been an invitation for you to come to New York. They have setup a series of signings and speaking engagements there for you. And they would like you to be there in 3 weeks.” She sat speechless with the phone in her hand, this had been her mothers dream, to go to America, but for her, it had never happened. Had she heard correctly, they were asking for her, ” Ates, are you there, did you hear what I said.” Bedir repeated it again. She took a deep breath, ” Bedir, I’m not sure if I’m ready, maybe it’s to soon.” Her heart sitting in her stomach. ” Trust me my dear, you’re ready, and don’t worry, I will have a entourage of people to accompany you, so you won’t be alone. They had never enter her mind, how she would manage the language. The arrangements had been made, and who was she to dispute what Bedir had done. He was the one person that had made her dreams come true. She was feeling the hurt of leaving Australia, and Oliver, that morning as she packed her bags. This was just her luck, she found someone that felt like, “the one” and Bedir whisks her off to another country.
He had made plans for her to fly to Naples and take care of her house there, and then a surprise trip to Istanbul, for a visit with her family before she left for the United States. The tour could be a lengthy one, maybe a month, so he knew she would want some time before the trip. The goodbye at the airport with Oliver, was much more than a “thank you for a job well done” goodbye, it was a ” I wish I didn’t have to go” goodbye. With them both visible feeling the effects of their time together. What neither of them knew at that time, was Bedir had requested that Mr. Oliver Anderson be part of the entourage going with Ates to New York, as her assistant. And he was to meet her in Istanbul to travel with her to the United States.
Did the Divit triplets have a special something about them, that uniqueness that allowed them to follow their dreams and find what had been destined in their lives. It seemed they did….
Deniz and Asli had yet another surprise for their family, when his mother called them to tell them Ates was coming home to visit again, before traveling to America. But they decided to wait until she was there.
It would turn out to be the night that would change the lives of not one, but of all the Divit children……..
Chapter 27
Yilly and Ali arrived first at her parents home, with a different look on their faces. And then Duman arrived minutes later, practically bursting at the seams with excitement. Deniz and Asli made it there just before Ates, both of them seemingly in a daze. Can and Sanem both knew there children well, and could tell there was much more than Ates’s news to be told.
When their second daughter arrived with a very handsome young man in tow, the night took on a whole different meaning.
Yilly, of course, was the first to deliver her news, ” Since we are all here together, we want to take this time to tell everyone that we are getting married.” The oldest Divit triplet had broke the ice, making the first of many announcements of the night. The family was elated, but not surprised at the news. After the hugs and kisses were over, Duman made an announcement of his own, “Mom, Dad, I have finally convinced Yasmin and her mother to move back to Istanbul, and if she will, I too will be asking her to marry me.”….Of course if you approve.” He would never change, always being Duman, seeking that approval.
The news of Ates’ travel to America was not all she had to offer, she also had this very handsome man she had to explain. She was more that happy to introduce everyone to her Oliver Anderson, and to tell them all, they were indeed, in a relationship, and he would be making the trip to America with her. The family was more than surprised that she had fell so deeply and so quickly for this man, but she had never been one that they doubted, not when it came to her heart. So this family had yet another reason to celebrate.
The last, but probably the most surprising announcement came from Deniz and Asli. ” Well, it seems my dear family,” Deniz said, clearing his throat, ” After a visit to the doctor a few days ago, the little bundle of joy we will be expecting, will actually be a bundle of two. We are having twins.” The announcement stunned the family, but nothing could have been more fitting. Twins…..how would this evolve the Divit name, I’m sure it would be in the most amazing way.
Can and Sanem Divit had done it, they had produced the perfect family…….And they had done it all from love,….and knowing their destiny…………
All the years that had brought them pain, seemed to be wiped away in a instant, as they listened to their family give them all their good news. The next years of their lives would be filled with a happiness that they could have never expected.
They both retired, proudly turning over Fakri Harika to their daughter Yildiz Divit Ozdemir. Planning to travel the world as he had always promised her, and to live the lives with as much love as they had for last 40 years.
Their family would grow and expand, making Can and Sanem proud grandparents over and over again.
Deniz and Asli had twin boys, and then 3 years later, a surprise gift of a girl.
Yilly and Ali, gave them three beautiful grand babies, all girls. Which they prayed would not all be a like their mother
Ates and Oliver married in the United States while on her book tour, and returned to make their home in Australia. After their fourth child, a boy, that would join his brother and 2 sister, Ates chose to write quietly at home with her family. No more tours……
Can and Sanem lived a long and happy life, bashing in the love of all their children.
She was still his other half, his one and only……..And he was still her Albatross…….
